I just listened to Steve Austin's interview with Tommy Dreamer the other day on his podcast (which is awesome by the way) and Dreamer mentioned something about a rumor that Abyss was supposed to go to WWE in 2003 and face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 19, but he ended up not doing it for some reason.
I've never heard anything about this, so I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on this story.
*EDIT* I meant to post this in the Classic Wrestling Board, but for whatever reason it got posted here. Move if needed.

Huh, never heard that before. I wonder how they would have brought him in? Would he have gone to OVW first? Would he have basically been in the same gimmick? This was before TNA really took off isn't it?

I've heard that rumor before, but not about him facing the Undertaker. I think it was a bit later than 2003 though because he hadn't even really been around in TNA yet in 2003. I'd say maybe '05 or '06 is more like it. The rumors were getting pretty serious from what I remember, then he just showed back up in TNA again.

If we're to believe tommy (love dreamer but he was full of crap for half the podcast) Dreamer had been working in talent relations in 2003 Abyss was all but signed but decided to stay with the just recently formed TNA because he believed he wasn't ready to face Taker at Mania, to this day Abyss has no regrets about that decision

In 2003 Abyss was a legit monster.
In 2014 Abyss ate an entire McDonald's.

I've never heard of this before. Abyss was imposing as hell from like 2003 until maybe 2007. Like, after his NWA Title run things started to fall for him. Sucks too because I enjoyed his work during that time.

Yeah, Abyss just ran into a situation where he did everything he could possibly do the first 4-5 years he was in TNA. It was kind of like the Attitude Era. He kept taking those bumps and beating the sh*t out of himself and eventually the crowd was going to become desensitized to what he was willing to do. He was great with Raven, Rhino, definitely his Lockdown match with AJ, but I just feel like it was the same deal over-and-over again. He was a Foley knock off and that's all it really came down to I guess, but he turned it into a damn fine career in TNA.
I think 2003 vs Taker would have been good. It might have been a total gimmick situation but I think it would have turned out well. Had it happened around 2005 it probably would have been excellent. I don't know how he can't have regrets over that decision though.

Better him than Roadkill VS The Undertaker (if Bruce Prichard is to be believed)

Wouldn't have been any worse than the handicap match.

That would have been cool, but all I can think of is how sh*tty that match would be NOW...

There were reports of him qutting TNA in early 2005 and possibly being WWE bound. He ended up returning about two weeks later.

He doesn't look quite as agile as he was 10-12 years ago (he's 40, so that makes sense), but he still has decent movement. He could be useful for a couple of years.
