I was listening to the Pipers Pit podcast today... His Guest was none other than Gangrel. During the interview they not only discussed the origin of the Gangrel name, but some of the legal issues that have been encountered because of it. During this, he off-handedly said that an 'arrangement' was attempted with Mattel, but they could not come to an agreement. This is most likely due to the 'Gangrel' name being trademarked by White Wolf.
I just want to make it clear, Gangrel is probably number 1 on my most wanted list. We haven't seen a figure of him since the BCA days, and we he has never had a Real Scan figure. Now assuming that a deal cannot be made and the Gangrel name cannot be used, how would you like to see Mattel release the figure? To me, i could see the following options being viable.
1: Use an alternate spelling for Gangrel. This would be the closest we can get to the Gangrel name, but i imagine that some MOC collectors wouldnt be too happy with this. Also, i'm not sure of the legality of changing a trademarked name so minorly.
2. Use one of Gangrel's other ring names. Whilst these names may have been used by the man in question, they wouldnt be accurate in represent this portrayal of David Heath in this time period
3. Use The Brood name or Brood logo This would fit the time period and fits the gimmick, but again isnt totally accurate for the single figure. Using a logo instead of a name has been done before (see Jakk's TNA Suicide figure)
4. Package with Edge and/or Christian in a two or three pack and label it 'The Brood' This solution would technically be the most accurate, but it would mean that a Gangrel figure will never see a single release, which some may not be a fan of.
Now if it was up to me, i'd like to see a singles figure released either under the 'Vampire Warrior' or 'Brood' name.
*Edit* Guys, just be clear, this thread wasn't really about whether we should see a Gangrel figure or not... It was more about what their solution to the name problem would be if they were to release one.

Ken Shamrock, Debut Flash Funk (similar to his BCA figure) and Gangrel are my biggest wants from the attitude era at this point. I think they could just put "Vampire" on there or even just leave the name part blank if they did him. Anyway, I do hope we get him at some point with possibly a variant with blood running down his chin onto his shirt lol.

Just call him the Brood. We all know who it is. MOC collectors will be angry, but too bad. Least we'll be getting him.

We also haven't seen a Dlo Brown since BCA. at least Gabgrel had a TTL. Why not just put "whitewolf tm" under the name everywhere it's placed on the box and such? That way everyone's happy. I've never understood this deal with his name. Going Back to wrestlemania 2000 for N64 lol.

i appreciate the OPs detail in his choice and his want for the figure but i really don't think theres a huge market for gangrel, aside from a small chunk of people. he really accomplished very little in wwe aside from his entrance.

I actually agree, Gangrel may be somewhat more of an internet exclusive deal. However, considering the unique look the figure would have and the wrestlers / era that were associated with Gangrel, i think it would sell pretty well. Also, again from that Podcast, it seems Mattel were trying to reach out anyway.

Would you be able to just put it in quotations? Or David "Gangrel" Heath, or Write it like: GanGrel (With the secondary uppercase "G")... Probably not... humm... I think I'd just add an extra "L"

Ganja-rel??? Idk just thinkin
Seriously though...... Gangrel was cool looking and the brood was fun. So was Val Venus. But they weren't major title contenders so I'm not sure how well they would sell. But as long as we're making doink.....why not?? I'll buy it definitely!

Sucks to hear we were close to getting a Mattel but it fell thru. They would nail it too. Let's just put the brood on the package and get this done.

Brood would definitely work. So would a 2 pack with edge or Christian and call it the brood and just leave their names off of it.

Yup "The Brood" wouldn't bother me either. That or Vampire Warrior.

I can't possibly imagine Mattel would be able to get away with spelling "Gangrel" differently just to avoid trademark infringement. They'd definitely face a lawsuit over it. It isn't that simple, unfortunately, although I would definitely love a Gangrel figure.
But anyway, the WWE has basically shown in the past that whenever there's any sort of legal implications that could arise out of releasing a figure when they don't have the rights to a guy's name, or in CM Punk's case his tattoos, they stay away altogether. They never allowed Jakks to do a Ricky Steamboat figure because he lost the rights to his ring name temporarily when his wife divorced him, and they also made Jakks discontinue using similar replacement images for CM Punk's GI Joe and Pepsi tattoos on his first ECW figure because they were too close to the real things. It's just not worth it to the WWE to risk being sued.
