So something I've noticed over the years is people here saying that Rey should have never been made champion in 2006. Whilst I agree that his booking was atrocious, I wonder why people say he should have never been champion in the first place? The main argument I see is the idea that he wasn't believable as champion, but IMO that is complete bollocks. We all 'believe' that WWE is scripted, so why does it matter how tall Rey is against his opponents? As long as someone is a good wrestler, a good talker and over with the fans they should be 'believable' against anyone no matter the size. Rey was a great worker, an industry veteran, he had a unique (for WWE) look and moveset, he was an ok talker, and he was definitely hugely over, especially with the kids. You could definitely argue that, because of Cena's unpopularity, Undertaker's and HBK's longevity (so people were less excited to see them despite loving them) and Batista's absence, that Rey was the most over guy on the roster going into WM22. How is that not justification enough for having the belt? Maybe winning the Rumble from #2 in the buildup was a bit much, and they did lean on the Eddie story too much as well, but those were specific story points which WWE got all wrong before and after he was booked to win at WM anyway. Nonetheless I still see people upset at the very idea that Rey would be champion, even if the booking had been excellent. That's what I don't understand. Assuming the booking was good, rather than the cluster that we got (I even heard Rey was supposed to lose to JBL straight after WM before he decided to retire which just made 0 sense), would people still have an issue with Rey being champion in 2006?

Besides me not being a fan, I didn't like that he was given the title because Eddie died. Had Eddie not died, Rey wouldn't have won the title. Who knows if he ever would have.

I don't think anyone had a problem with the idea of Rey Mysterio being Champion, but I think the problem lies that he only got the belt because Eddie Guerrero had died, and it was a tribute of sorts to Eddie.
Rey went on to win the World Title again, and even the WWE Title, so clearly the WWE was behind the Rey Mysterio fan base, just he won his first World Title in a... I don't want to use the word tainted, but I think we all know that if Eddie hadn't died in November 2005, that Rey wouldn't have won the World Title at Wrestlemania 22.

The story that was told made you believe he was a credible champion, it's how he was booked when he got the belt that made his reign suck. Having him lose clean to Great Khali and Mark Henry as champ was very very silly. The chase was great to watch but once he got the belt, he looked like a chump.

Let's not forget the time Rey Mysterio won The WWE Championship in 2012 and in the same night lost to Cena.

It worked well around here. I live in a mostly Latino area and Rey Mysterio was practically God at school.

He was past his prime, terrible on the mic, wasn't an ass kicking machine, nor an elaborate character. Him being world champion wasn't hard to believe, it was the push that they gave him that was unbelievable.

It never bothered me. But some of the things Orton did before hand certainly did.

I love Rey, he's always been one of my absolute favorites.
He is a believable champion, he's an underdog, people could say Bryan's not a belive champion.

Same reason people want the cruiserweight title back -- they don't think the small wrestlers should ever hold the major titles.

Rey may be small in height, but let's face it.... he's fat now! haha Rey Mysterio is like the biggest smallest wrestler ever. He looked to be like close to 200lbs the last time I seen him. And he hasn't wrestled without a top for a long time. I am guessing the steroids he was on in the early 2000's has just ended up making him fat now.

I liked it. He deserved it.
Orton saying "Eddie is in Hell" was stupid.
Mysterio's post-title win booking was worse.

I was cool with it.
Him beating Jack Swagger for the World Title in 2010? Dumb.

Wasn't a fan of it at all, but over time it's not the worst thing I've seen in wrestling as it pertains to a guy winning the title...

It kinda left a bitter taste in my mouth because it seemed like he was just sponging off of Eddie's death. Other than that I have no problem with Rey being champion. Why not have somebody be champion who isn't a typical 230+ lbs tank?

Meh I didn't mind the idea, but as said again and again, the execution of his run after WM 22 was dire. Not credibility at all.
Interestingly, WWE wanted to put the Intercontinental championship on Chavo, also a "tribute" to Eddie (just to push a "Guerrero" after Eddie's death, and create a feelgood moment), and Chavo said no. He was going to beat Benjamin I believe.

I think it was a combo of it being too tied into Eddie and the anti-cruiserweight bias. Rey was really on top of his game at that point, though, and extremely over, so I had no problem with it.
I hate how smaller guys are booked once they actually have the championship. Just makes it seem like Rey (or Bryan, or Punk's first World title run, etc.) like they are unworthy champions and got lucky to win the title in the first place. I hate that they make it out to be "unbelievable" that a small guy could beat a big guy, and find it frustrating when fans buy into that mentality, especially when smaller guys kick the asses of larger ones in real life all the time. Whether it be a street fight, the earlier "freak show" days of MMA/UFC, or real backstage fights between pro wrestlers, smaller guys hold their own and more, so it makes no sense for folks to talk about it being "not believable" when it comes to matches on TV.

I enjoyed his RR win and push......I realised that it was because of Eddie and I was ok with that.
However.......
His title win was hampered from Day 1. His triumphant moment came in a match that was nearly as long as Cena & HHH's(especially HHHs) bloated entrances @ that years WM......
Plus all the sh*t out Orton's mouth about Guerrero was just cheap.....even though Vince and Steph"wise beyond her chest size" no doubt thought it was aces.
Then as Champ he was fed to the useless and already disposable Henry and then later Khali.......
Surely Rey was not going to succeed after this? Some very confusing booking IMO.
