Anyone else find it strange that we did not get a HIAC match in 2001? Its the only year since the matches inception that we didn't get one. I know we got 2 in 2000, and the 6-man HIAC was in December of 2000, but I still think they could have put one on in the fall of 2001. I think Austin/Angle would have been great in the cell. After the amazing match they put on at SS, and the 3 month personal feud they had, fighting inside the Cell at Unforgiven would have made sense. Austin wouldn't have the Alliance to interfere for him, and Angle finally gets Austin one on one.
Anyone else feel like Austin/Angle or another feud could have used the cell match in 2001 or was Vince right for holding off on using it that year?

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I always found it strange that it wasn't used in 2001, which had some relatively big feuds. Austin/HHH at the start of the year and Austin/Angle could have both used it. Maybe even something completely outside the box and give us the TLC teams in a Cell. Why not?

If Triple H had not gotten hurt that year, I could easily have seen a Trips/Austin HIAC match. Austin vs. Angle would have been a stretch though. IMHO.

I could dig the TLC teams inside the Cell. Would be something different and those guys could have put on another classic. lol off topic I thought I put this in the classics board. Feel free to move it admins.

At the rate those TLC teams worked, someone would have died doing something off the cell.

The Survivor Series 2001 Alliance vs. WWF match would have been killer inside HIAC if it had a War Games style to it. It could have been like both sides have an equal opportunity with it being a mix of HIAC for WWF and War Games for WCW.
Other than that, im not really sure where I would have had one tbh. Its easy to say Trips/Austin at No Way Out 01 but they had just done HIAC not even 2 PPVs earlier at Armageddon 00. I don't think HIAC was really needed in 2001.

Yeah I often wondered this too.....especially when ratings and PPV buys went into a downward slide from SSlam 01 onwards.....

Kane vs. Triple H would've made a good cell match instead of the chain match they ended up having.
Also, my dream match at the time was a TLC/Hell in a Cell hybrid with HardyZ, DudleyZ and E&C.

The TLC/HIAC hybrid idea is great. I think the Austin/Angle/RVD triple threat at No Mercy would have been great inside HIAC as well. Austin and Angle already had the blood feud going, and throwing RVD in the wild card would have put the match over the top IMO. I'd also have loved to have seen what RVD could have done inside the cell.

Agreed. seems like they stopped using the cell while ratings were blistering in 2001 and ratings were falling off the cliff for WCW. When WWF's ratings were on the slide in 2002 they used it twice..... HHH vs Jericho-crap Lesnar vs UT- which was awesome obviously.

Makes sense considering when hiac matches mattered it was usually a big draw (something they haven't been in years). The taker/lesnar hiac is still my favorite hiac ever. Agreed that the hhh/jericho match was crap. Even jericho couldn't carry a slow and roided hhh to a decent cell match.

Plus just like their WM18 encounter? there wasn't a single person in the building or watching on PPV thought Jericho had a chance of winning.

The Jericho/Triple H one felt so forced as well; it was just made for Triple H to go over again, no real reason to truly have it...Lesnar/Taker made sense...Taker's hand being busted added a great dimension to it as well...

HHH vs Jericho was bull.....just like their entire feud. now Lesnar vs Taker......whoo boy. 1) Taker has a legit busted hand(and he drilled Lesnar with that cast hardway several times) 2) Lesnar slips in his own sweat and puts a hole in UTs head with the steel steps...... 3) The blood loss is that severe Vince offers UT to finish early through the ref I will never forget UT having to wipe the blood out of his eyes to see Lesnar so he could pick him up......the drama was off the charts. Godammit I thought UT had him and I marked......only for that absolutely unreal reversal. oh F*CK this. I'm gonna watch this right now.

That Taker/Lesnar cell match is indeed an underated one. Absolutely brutal match.
In 2001, like mentioned, HHH/Austin is one that made sense and would've worked.
