I miss the days when people had to earn their Royal Rumble spot, I mean, look back in SmackDown before the 2004 Royal Rumble you saw various guys earn their Royal Rumble spot:
John Cena and Chris Benoit defeated Nunzio, Chuck Palumbo, and Johnny Stamboli in a Handicap match – SmackDown!, December 30 (aired January 1)
Rico defeated Tommy Dreamer – Heat, January 12 (aired January 18)
Matt Morgan defeated Orlando Jordan – Velocity, January 13 (aired January 17)
Rikishi defeated Scotty 2 Hotty – SmackDown!, January 13 (aired January 15)
The World's Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas) defeated Basham Brothers (Doug and Danny Basham) – SmackDown!, January 13 (aired January 15)
Nunzio defeated Chuck Palumbo and Johnny Stamboli in a Triple Threat Battle Royal – SmackDown!, January 13 (aired January 15)
Big Show defeated Funaki – SmackDown, January 13 (aired January 15)
Tajiri defeated Billy Kidman – SmackDown!, January 20 (aired January 22)
A-Train defeated Shannon Moore – SmackDown, January 20 (aired January 22)
Bradshaw defeated Akio and Sakoda in a Triple Threat match – SmackDown!, January 20 (aired January 22)
I hate how people just enter the Rumble just by announcing it, with just 30 spots, people must earn their spot.
Opinions guys?

I agree, unless your Randy Orton or Chris Jericho you should have to win to get in. *EDIT* Just remembered exactly how small the roster is, it worked in the RA era because of how big the RAW and Smackdown! rosters were.

You're right. Wrestlers should have to beat someone in order to qualify for the Royal Rumble. Maybe it doesn't have to be on TV though. If creative has better story lines set up for television then those qualifying matches could happen at house shows, but they definitely should happen.

Problem is they only have 30 legit stars nowadays. And a few miss out anyways just so they can add a surprise entry or two each year.

The roster isn't big enough to have guys who lose the qualifying matches, except in obvious cases where it'd be like Kane vs Justin Gabriel in a qualifying match.

I never liked the idea because you knew for sure that the losers couldn't enter the match and I prefer to be surprised at the Rumble.
However it works well in a huge feud like Austin and McMahon were he had to defeat Undertaker to enter in 1999

I liked when they had the segments of the guys picking their numbers

I do wish they'd emphasize the sport and competition more, and a Royal Rumble spot should be something to work for. I do like the surprise guys though(Diesel), but I hated when all 3 members of the announce team wasted spots.

I liked when they had the segments of the guys picking their numbers The Eddie Guerrero/Ric Flair segments in 2005 were hilarious.

What about doing something similar in NXT in the future? Maybe have a battle royal where the winner gets a spot in the Rumble.

I see what your saying, but with a small roster (like everyone else has said) it doesn't seem doable.
And honestly it wasn't something I was really missing.
