So I was thinking today (after a few beers admittedly so maybe its just drunk gibberish) that these guys have quite a bit in common in wrestling folklore.
Similarities:
Both #2 in the company for long stretches Both seen as the main antagonist for the #1 for a long period Both pretty good at this job (not Randy's fault he's faced Cena 1000x times) Both unable to quite reach the same level as #1 Both have big wrestling families (to an extent) Both arguably underappreciated in their own time Both named Randy
It won't let me add a poll because WF glitches on my laptop sometimes because the coding or something sucks I dunno, so just say who you prefer. I'm expecting a landslide for Savage but I personally quite like Orton.

I loved Orton's Legend Killer gimmick, but past that I think Savage was better.
I don't think Orton is really that great in the ring, I can't really name a single memorable match he's had other than losing to Triple H at Mania and his 100000000000 matches with Cena (Not because they are good but because they happen so frequently).

I see more similarities between Punk and Savage, especially now considering the bad terms Punk left the company on.

Macho had personality, Macho could talk on the mic MUCH better than Orton. If I were to compare anyone to Randy Orton I would compare him to Rick Martel. Both could wrestle, both could talk but not the best at talking, both had a world title run at some point, and both had some nice pushes.

His 2011 series of matches with Christian was damn good as was his WrestleMania 27 match with CM Punk. I've enjoyed a fair amount of Orton matches. Hell, even the 2009 Hell in a Cell with Cena was good (the only one of their matches that I really enjoyed). It's all about when he's motivated. If he is, he can go, if he's not, it's a snoozefest.

I think a lot of it may have to do with he prefers being heel and when he is he works at a snails pace. Out of the matches you listed, he was face in all but one and he had damn good opponents. I've never seen the Cena match, I got out of wrestling at that time but I hope it was at least better than their most recent HiaC match lol. I will give you that he did have damn good chemistry with Christian. I always wanted face Orton vs Heel Punk for the title during Punk's reign, too bad WWE were to busy wasting Orton on SD.

It was much better than their 2014 HIAC. Orton was in full "Viper" mode and played the cunning, vicious heel at his very best.

Punk's top rope elbow drop may be the sloppiest elbow drop I have ever seen given. Two charismatic, unique guys that were on the smaller side relative to their generation. Both very good all rounders (but likely to be best remembered for their promos) that eventually rose to great popularity, but somewhat hindered by the presence of a more marketable, larger company man with a lot of stroke and safe-bet drawing power. Both ended up as the top heel on the show facing said top guy. Then as I said they both left on bad terms with the company. Not saying they're exactly alike, I just see the two as more similar than Orton and Savage.

But the key factor here is that Savage - unlike Punk - actually was in the main event at a Wrestlemania, not once, but twice!

Steve Austin always reminded me of Randy Savage. Just something about the look in their eyes.

Randy Savage was more flashy with his attire and how he presented himself. Randy Orton could care less about what people think about his attire and his trunks lol so Savage wins there.

I also think you are underestimating Orton's star power - other than Cena he is the only guy in the WWE who is in the mainstream, or at the very least his finisher certainly is. There's a lot more people in the USA that will know the RKO than the ones that will know Randy Savage I think (not to belittle Savage's wonderful career). I still can't believe WWE Shop didn't produce an 'RKO Outta Nowhere' shirt 5 seconds after the meme started. Orton himself seemed super-pissed they didn't, and rightly so.

I'm not a terribly huge fan of either man to be honest....so they have that in common for me. The legend Killer was easily the best period of Orton's career.....after that? Blah IMO.

WF (me included) would mark out so much if he brought that back sometime soon. Legend Killer Orton vs. Sting at WM31 anyone?

I don't think the "Legend Killer" moniker could work anymore for Orton, being he is a Legend himself. It's more suited for a rookie type guy.

I think they both had that "loose cannon" mentality when they weren't wrestling. Remember the trouble Orton got into by swiping some guy's memory card from his camera in a bar? The handbag incident? The trashed hotel room? Savage had his share of trouble, too. Fighting police dogs in a Waffle House, slamming an autograph seeker on the side of a highway in PA, keeping Elizabeth literally locked in the dressing room away from other guys.
But I think Orton has years to go before he gets anywhere close to being the level Savage was.
