Before ECW went Extreme....Before WWE had an Attitude....before WCW tried to be "shock tv"...there was I realize not everyone had the chance to see this. I was fortunate to have this literally in my backyard as I went to almost all the local shows here in the Knoxville area. Everything that people claim they "want" from wrestling, whether its Hardcore wrestling or Attitude Era style storylines or even just traditional Rasslin, Smoky Mountain had it. The roster was filled with Legendary greats from the past, greats from the present and many greats of the future. Every Armstrong came through SMW, including the Road Dogg. Glen Jacobs (Kane), Al Snow, Arn Anderson, Rock n Roll Express, Heavnely Bodies, Balls Mahoney, Chris Candido, and Sunny. Chris Jericho & Lance Storm both got their first American main stream pushes in SMW. The debut of The Gangstas with New Jack, Mustafa and D'Lo Brown whom were allowed to win matches with a 2 count due to Affirmative Action.

I loved Smoky Mountain Wrestling!
Used to watch it on WADL TV 38 from Detroit Michigan. Back then, every night at 7 pm they would air wrestling. ECW (Eastern Championship Wrestling), IWCCW, SAPW/NAWA, UWF (Herb Abrams), USWA, GWF, and of course, Smoky Mountain Wrestling.
Things I can remember from SMW...
- I could never get tired of the Heavenly Bodies vs. Rock N Roll Express
- Tracy Smothers was like "The Rock" of SMW
- Dirty White Boy was like "Stone Cold" of SMW
- I was like 14 when I was watching it, and seeing the Dirty White Girl constantly wear little jean shorts and go after Tammy Sytch in her business short skirt was very.... 'intense' for me at that age (my hand was stuck in an open hand fist grip forever it seemed haha)
- Bob Caudle on commentary; nuff said
- Chris Jericho and Lance Storm debut and it was my first time seeing these guys
- Chris Candido and Brian Lee made one helluva tag team
- Jake Roberts was a huge heel there with blinding the Dirty White Boy
- Al Snow & Unibomb were a great tag team too
- Shawn Michaels vs. Buddy Landell for the IC Title is a must see match actually from the SMW Super Bowl of Wrestling 95 show
- Arn Anderson & Bobby Eaton even had their feud take place there
Just over all, it was pretty sweet. It gave us that "Crockett" feel to a wrestling promotion that was long gone for some years. I still have a lot of the shows on DVD that I got over the years and at times I will still watch them.

After watching that video, I can see why SMW was ahead of its time. Living in the Northeast, I wasn't exposed to SMW. I did hear about it back in the day through various wrestling magazines. Just couldn't go by the articles and photos. I can see all of the elements you mentioned. Whenever I have time, I'll seek out clips of SMW to get the vibe of what the promotion was about.

sadly,my only exposure to SMW was through Pro Wrestling Illustrated, Inside wrestling, and the other magazines of the 80's/90's. never got it around here, but I remember a ton of those articles.

Got to see it just about monthly when they'd come through my area. The Rock N Roll Express were even bigger then than they were in the 80's. They should've went on to have a bigger run in one of the big 3. People seem to forget that Ricky Morton could flat out GO.
