Hey guys, I have been watching a lot of movies lately, and revisiting some I've not seen in a while due to my brother's girlfriend being enamoured with our DVD/BR collection. Upon revisiting some of these movies one that stuck out to me was Garden State, which is amazingly over a decade old now...the reason it sticks out is because of Natalie Portman's performance as Sam; a wonderfully flawed girl who evokes such empathy and charm... I wondered what you guys thought would be up there with great unique portrayals of characters where you almost can't differentiate between the actor portraying the character and the character itself... I understand Heath Ledger's Joker would be an obvious option - but what do you feel constitutes a great unique portrayal/performance? My mates Robert69 and JokerFC might know some... I reckon Anton Chigurh from No Country For Old Men would be up there; unique appearance, the use of the air tank, his demeanour and outlook... Cheers guys.

I think Anton is a good example. Ledger as Joker, of course. You've got great ones, there.
Hugo Weaving as V, in V for Vendetta. That character makes me want to take up arms against the futuristic British Government from right here in present day Indiana.
Sly as Rocky. I actually did a report, in college, on why Rocky Balboa and Sylvester Stallone were two individuals to themselves for my psych class. I got an A, and my teacher hated me.
Eminem in 8 Mile. This is, mainly, because he's playing himself, though.
I mean, if we're talking performances just where the person fit seamlessly into the role, they're few and far between...
Now if you want to expand it to "This person was phenomenal in their role, and I don't think anyone else could do it..." that expands to a whole different arena.

Thanks for the responses guys...
I thought this could be an interesting topic; quite open-ended of sorts...
However you interpret it, I guess the crux is how the character resonates with you with the time afforded and do they make a case for a unique character in itself as well as a performance that makes you go 'This character totally belongs here with these traits as performed by said actor/actress'...
Continuing with the Batman vein, I'd say both Liam Neeson's portrayal of Ra's Al Ghul/Ducard in Batman Begins and Tom Hardy's Bane in TDKR for me are right up there...
Even Chiwietel Ejifor in Serenity was excellent; I'd never seen a character behave like that and make you feel like 'I'm interested to see what this guy will do'.
Thanks again fellas.

It's coming along...good one, Joker.
Some more I thought of:
Michael Shannon's Nelson Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire...the religious undertones make him truly compelling...
Luke Goss as Prince Nuada in Hellboy 2...a conflicted prince of the underworld bound magically to his sister, wanting to protect his way of life by any means necessary...his conviction is such that you feel for him, even though he could be perceived as a clinical killer.
Eric Bana as Mark 'Chopper' Read in Chopper...this helped make Eric Bana HUGE here in Australia; he immersed himself in the role and it won awards left and right...even though he's based on a real person, the performance is gleaned from Bana's take on Chopper, and it doesn't necessarily 100% portray him the way Read was.
I guess this lends itself more to villainous type of roles as a question...and not just in this media; what with technology's advances...
...just also wanted to add Michael Mando's portrayal of Vaas from Far Cry 3... just a wonderfully eclectic character...

Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man was worth mentioning. I thought Brad Dourif as Doc Cochran (from Deadwood) was phenomenal. And the transformation Robert De Niro did in Raging Bull was fantastic.

Michael Rooker's performance as Rowdy Burns was just excellent and well done. Mark Hamill's voicing of The Joker in Batman TAS was just amazing. The whole cast of The Perfect Storm comes to mind Billy Zane as Caledon Hockley in Titanic Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar

I'd say Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko, it's a very singular, refined performance... He plays it so WELL and it's obviously completely different from what he is in real life.
Robert Downey Jr IS Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder!

Recent example that springs to mind is Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom in Nightcawler.
Guy is developing the best resume in Hollywood.

The entire cast of Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai
Adrien Brody in Pianist
I believe the greatest actor of all time is William Holden, so most of the movies he did I really like.
Johnny Depp in Edward scissorshands
Too many to think of at the moment I'll have to amend this post.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie.
Guy Pierce in Lawless.
Gary Oldman in True Romance
Tom Hardy in Bronson.
Are you asking for performances that make the actor unrecognizable? Or are you asking for performances where the actor just knocks it out of the park, and you couldn't imagine anyone else doing it better?

Just thought of some more.
Edward G Robinson and Charlton Heston in Soylent Green. The scene where they're eating real food is one of my all time favorite scenes.
Also for EGR in Cincinatti Kid.
Nicolas Cage in Bad lieut. Port of call New Orleans.
Orson Wells in Touch of Evil
Daniel Day Lewis in just about everything he does. He could possibly be the best actor alive.

As for your question(s), I guess a bit of both is the answer...

Luke Goss managed that in Blade II as Nomak as well.....even though he was a friggin MONSTER bent on human annihilation he managed to envoke sympathy because he was created by his fathers experiments on improving vampire kind. Shannon is another good choice.....guy was great as Zod too.

Vin Diesel in The Iron Giant.
Ron Perlman as Hellboy. To me, this is the single best casting of a comic book character ever. I don't think anyone else could pull it off like Perlman did.
