Called it on American Sniper... I have a very strong resentment towards this film. Idk if it's because I no longer think Clint Eastwood is a good director or if it has to do with the controversy surrounding Chris Kyle.. I see a preview for this film and automatically envision a banner that says " YEAH! AMERICA!", followed by fireworks. Why the hate on Clint?

It might just be the age, I'm not sure. But Gran Torino is the last movie I enjoyed from him, and it doesn't hold up for me years later.. I also feel that Invictus was underwhelming and Hereafter wasn't any good, but I swear to god after watching J.Edgar I gave up on him.

Cannot believe Lego Movie didn't get nominated for best animated. It was a good year for animated films but Lego was at the top of the heap.
Anyways.. Grand Budapest FTW!

I haven't seen the movie but that's not at all how I view this movie after hearing/reading about it. It looks gruesome and unnerving. Hardly recruitment worthy. Now that phrase may be better suited towards a movie like Saving Private Ryan or Lone Survivor, both phenomenal movies indeed.

Wow, the politics of Oscar season. Every year, about half the things nominated are deserving, favorites are played and about half the things snubbed are more deserving than the other half nominated. The Oscars have seemed for a while to be a whoopdedoo to make one movie spike in rentals and and for all the Hollywood cronies to jerk each other off.

Called it on American Sniper... The Academy is 76% old white men. Of course Clint Eastwood's movie got nominated. It has zero percent chance of winning, though. Zero. Especially since it's pretty public how terrible a person Chris Kyle really was (despite how this movie is positioned as an unironic Team America sequel). Gone Girl deserved a Best Picture nomination, and I thought Ben Affleck deserved a Best Actor nomination as well. As much attention as Rosamund Pike gets, I thought the subtleties of Affleck's performance were really what made the movie work. And as James Gunn noted earlier today, The LEGO Movie was better than at least 7 of the Best Picture nominees. Edit: And by the way, Meryl Streep. She doesn't belong anywhere near Best Supporting Actress this year.

It was great either last year or the year before when some comments got leaked that indicated that some members of the Academy nominated (and later voted for!) movies that they admitted that they hadn't seen.

The movie is pro-war propaganda in my opinion, and paints him, as a soldier, as an infallible man despite what his book clearly revealed. I've read excerpts of the book (mostly revealing his abject racism, blind patriotism and complete lies about events during his post-war life as a citizen) but not the whole thing. I read enough to form a reasonable opinion about him. And the movie was really mediocre, though Cooper's very skewed portrait of Kyle was electrifying. He's truly one of the best working leading men in the business today.

It's weird. When I was younger I used to care a lot about Oscar noms and wins, and what was nominated for what. Now I couldn't be bothered and I don't know why.

That's the beauty of discussions! 100% agree about your statement regarding Cooper.. he's transformative

Still in shock about the Lego Movie and the snubs regarding Gone Girl. Pulling through for Boyhood to win best picture. A film being produced over a constant period of 12 years and with the same original cast is historical and outstanding. However, since I've never seen any of these films this year, I don't know what to expect. I heard that Ruffalo did outstanding in Foxcatcher.

1. GBH to win BP. 2. Streep. 3. Moore to win BA. I'm just being a grumpy jerk though I definitely think Julianne Moore should win Best Actress. I loved her. I would be okay with Rosamund Pike winning (though I thought Affleck was the standout performer in Gone Girl). Grand Budapest Hotel was, to me, the usual boring hipster fare from Wes Anderson, so I agree there. And yeah. Meryl ing Streep just must be nominated every year, it seems.

Oh and FWIW my vote for Best Picture would be Boyhood, then Birdman and Whiplash. The rest were pretty disposable movies IMO, especially Imitation Game. Benedict Cumberbatch bores me to death.
