Indeed. That's the biggest issue I've read with it, too. The 'Patriotism' of it. As if being a Patriot is such a criminal act, these days. The way this movie has been written about makes it seem like it's a war propaganda film like Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will. I think it's more than an overreach to claim that this is some kind of recruitment material "oooo rah mother er", john wayne jerk fest. Ridiculous. I think my issue with the movie and why I haven't gone to see it, and issues with the author of the book, who was kind of a pathological liar. I'm sure the movie is well done, I'm just not crazy about the source material.

I would say the movie is much closer to an army recruitment video than it is an honest biography.

I am about to see American Sniper so that is good because I have been REALLY behind on seeing the Oscar nomination movies this year..
Of all of the movies nominated this year so far I only have seen:
Boyhood Birdman Into The Woods Gone Girl Nightcrawler Maleficent Guardians of the Galaxy Interstellar The Lego Movie The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Captain America: The Winter Soldier Dawn of the Planet of the Apes X-Men: Days of Future Past
And most of the films I've seen are only nominated for below the line categories..
I really need to see The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Selma, Still Alice, Whiplash, Wild, Foxcatcher, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

I saw American Sniper earlier today and while it was good I don't think it should win any top Oscars (and I don't foresee it doing so anyways). If anything it could win one or both of the sound categories so give it Best Sound Mixing or Best Sound Editing. Both of those awards usually go to the same movie but last time I checked Interstellar was the frontrunner. You never know though because the Academy seemed to love this movie so they may want to award it somewhere and these categories are the only place to do it imo considering Best Picture and Best Editing are going to Boyhood, Best Actor is going to Keaton or Redmayne, and Best Adapted Screenplay is likely going to The Imitation Game or Whiplash. Back to the movie though, I did not know that the real dude died by some crazy in 2013. That made me so depressed at the end.

I saw The Imitation Game today and really liked it. I think both Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley are solid nominees in their respective categories. Here is the updated list of movies I've seen this award season and the ones I still need to see: Boyhood Birdman American Sniper The Imitation Game Into The Woods Gone Girl Nightcrawler Maleficent Guardians of the Galaxy Interstellar The Lego Movie The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Captain America: The Winter Soldier Dawn of the Planet of the Apes X-Men: Days of Future Past And most of the films I've seen are only nominated for below the line categories.. I really need to see The Theory of Everything, Selma, Still Alice, Whiplash, Wild, Foxcatcher, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Thankfully Whiplash is back in theaters although only at like 10 at night so Idk if I can make it one night.. My aunt recorded The Grand Budapest Hotel on HBO so I am glad I will be able to check that off my list considering it has a lot of important nominations. I still have time to watch The Theory of Everything, Selma, and Whiplash in theaters but sadly it seems my local independent theater (Tower Theater) booted out Foxcatcher and Wild. They should be getting Still Alice one of these days though so I will be sure to see it since I know she will win Best Actress.

Not only is it a great movie, it's also a great theatrical experience.

Maybe Wednesday night or Thursday night because tonight would be bad since I have class tomorrow.. I need to check Fandango to see if it is still at my main theater (Century) on those days.

I thought American Sniper was funny and entertaining but for all the wrong reasons. The two villains are straight out of a 1980's action flick. The movie did feel like a Reagan era film.
Anyways, I still say Grand Budapest Hotel is the best movie I saw this year. I never saw Selma(burned out on the white guilt movies) nor Theory of Everything(also burned out of the generic biopics - see Imitation Game) Give Linklater best director but Budapest best picture.
Actor: Keaton or Carell Actress: Julianne Moore Supporting Actor: JK Simmons Supporting Actress: Arquette Animated: Should be LEGO Movie but Song of the Sea

So many people like it. I don't know what I missed, because I really didn't enjoy it. I guess I didn't like Life Aquatic the first time I saw it either.

American Sniper was by far the favorite movie I saw all year. Grand Budapest Hotel being a close second.
Steve Carell winning best actor would be a real crazy moment, going from the goofy "40 Year Old Virgin" guy to Oscar.
Fury and Lego Movie were snubbed.

Please never play a Call of Duty game then. The movie isn't exactly praising what Kyle did, it shows him struggling with the job he has and how it negatively effects his family and mental health. Edgy post though.

I don't agree with Birdman winning, but Redmayne needed to win Best Actor. Dude was incredible in The Theory of Everything.

I'm gonna have to write this one down in my notes of things that I never thought I would see happen. Even if disagreement is included in the same statement.

Birdman deserved best picture.
Boyhood absolute did not.. Soo this director filmed a child growing up over the course of 12 years and made a movie about it? Is that really groundbreaking? That takes more patience than skill in my opinion. I have 11 years of my life with my family on film also.. Its called my childhood and their recorded on home movies..
I'm not impressed by Boyhood. I think it's neat that he was able to pull it off.. Just not groundbreaking.

Considering I keep up with the big award shows a lot, I pretty much knew who would win.
The only slight surprise was that Whiplash won Editing, Birdman for Original Screenplay, and How To Train Your Dragon 2 losing to Big Hero 6.
All of those were either close or distant runners up though so it wasn't like it was a true shocker.
I found NPH to be a HORRID host and I hope he never comes back.. The show had way too much filler so I was glad I started watching an hour or so into it.
