Does anybody else find the Mattel figure run as fascinating a measuring stick for time?
If I remember reading this correctly, Mattel inked the deal in late 2008 to take over the license in 2010. So 2009 would've been the time they spent developing molds and 2008-2009 would be the intial time frame the figures were bases upon. Now, with a wide selection of parts, they are able to turn basics pretty fast so we are so close to being up to date with certain figures.
Out-of-date looks frustrate some who want their collection to reflect the current product on t.v., but I personally like the time capsule nature of the line.
It becomes so fascinating to see who has came and went, who was being pushed hard and isn't now, and people who were drastically re-packaged (Skip Sheffield and Brodus Clay come to mind). Wonderful gimmicks like the "disfigured Cody Rhodes" are captured perfectly with a figure like Elite 13.
The passage of Mattel is very interesting to me, too, because I have known my wife almost the same amount of time as Mattel has had these figures on the market, since I met her in October 2009.
What old figures fascinate you the most and what are your best memories of these 5 long years?

The Undertaker figures would be a good example of what say. From his 2004 look to his mohawk look, all the robes, and not even counting E23, E18, the DM one and SDCC ones.

I think it's great how the modern lines allow you to collect stars from other eras. Through the 80's and 90's it was pretty much just the stars of the time, but now the legends are getting the best action figures yet.

Obviously, I have to give Jakks a tip of the hat for doing this with the Classic Superstars and TNA Legends of the Ring series. But how awesome is it to have a nWo Macho Man beside a DX X-Pac, beside Bruno Sammartino, beside AWA Sgt. Slaughter, and so on and so on.

It can be pretty cool, but it gets frustrating when it takes them so long to do updated attires that are simple changes.

I agree here. Capturing right now as well as they have is excellent. I feel like some of the main roster figures from 2010 are essentially what could be considered legends/fb a few years from now. Hurricane for instance may not get another fig, but that gimmick is as classic to me as Doink or JYD.

Yeah, it's kind of wild. Especially if you go back and look at stuff from the first year or two and you remember what was happening on the current product at the time. Finlay and Hornswoggle, Jef Hardy, Carlito, MVP, JoMo, Knox, Mickie James, Hurricane. Hell even just that Elimination Chamber Drew McIntyre figure and thinking back to when Sheamus was a hot commodity, pretty crazy stuff.
I was pretty much out of collecting. I was in under grad and grad school through the heart of the Jakks Classics stuff and only had a handful. So when I ventured out to Kmart on 1/1/2010 and picked up an E1 CM Punk, I had no idea what I would be in-store for over the next 5 years. Thousands of dollars later...
I think we're getting to the point where we have way more than I ever thought we would, at least in my mind going back to that first year. Especially with the Legends line being canceled, losing Entrance Greats and Defining Moments. Getting Sting is going to be surreal. If we ever get Raven or Owen it's going to be the same deal for me where I'll likely be holding something and I still don't believe it. Been a really fun ride and I'm not looking for it to end any time soon.

I met my wife in October of 09 as well. Stayed up all night on New Years eve and hit Kmart at Ten in the morning to find that first cube unpicked. I grabbed as much as I could that day. Its cool to look back at those figs which I still have.
