Safe to say there gimmick has flopped and the fans don't really give a crap. All 3 are extremely talented and have a major upside, so my question what would you do with them? Keep them as is, release them, gimmick change, make them singles guys? This is what I would do.
Keep them off TV until the RAW after WM. It's supposed to be New Day vs a random team, out they come with a mic with one of them, probably Woods saying cut the music, the music gets cut, and Woods goes on to rant against the company in a "shoot" promo saying how they are the 3 most talented guys but are being held back and degraded to terrible music and preach happiness to the little kids and fans alike, they say that the machine doesn't want them to break through the glass ceiling and claim that it is because they are of African descent, and basically rants about being treated like dirt because he is black. Out come PTP and tell them that it isn't like that, that the WWE is all about creating opportunities for yourself and maybe they just don't IT. New Day then attacks PTP setting up a feud with New Day being heels and changing up their attires, music (using that Wale & Flatbush Zombie song done for them), etc.
What do you guys think?

Something with a Heel turn could work pretty well for them because all this 'all smiles-preaching' doesn't connect with the fans at all somehow...

First week, they defeat Kidd and Cesaro. After the match, Big E won't stop going after Kidd, and Kingston and Woods have to pull him off. 2nd week, Woods injures one of the Matadores in a match. 3rd week, Kingston refuses to shake hands with, I dunno, Jey Uso, and the New Day beat down the Usos. The next week, they come out to the ring, and declare that "A New Day has truly begun", and they begin ruthlessly destroying all of their opponents.
Or, they could just keep them how they are now, because I like them like that.

New Day reminds me of Rocky Maivia. That doesn't mean I'd turn them into the Rock though. What I would do is keep them together as a trio, but I'd drop the dancing and singing happy go lucky gimmick and just make them three friends real passionate about wrestling who share similar outlooks and interests outside the ring.
My guess is that they like a lot of the same things your average wrestling fan does. Show us that so we can relate. Once we relate, we'll care. Then we'll be more emotionally invested in their matches.
I mean, you can keep some of the aspects of their gospel shtick, but make it more tounge and cheek, and less legit. Like, we know this comes across as stupid, but we're doing it as a joke because we think it's funny, so laugh along and you'll be in on the joke.
I think if you did that, it would get over.

Meh, quitely let them break up and and let Big E and Xavier out of their contracts. Kofi can just continue being enhancement talent.

I want them to stay together. And I'm not saying turn them into the NOD or anything, but I think a heel turn is necessary. They can be heels without it being about race or discrimination. All 3 are gifted talent and deserves some direction. They deserve better.

After several losses, Mark Henry pulls them aside, and tells them he's embarrassed by their weakness, and he will show them the way. They hesitate, but concede that he's right. They don't become a 'New Nation' per se, but definitely have an edge. They can have a long feud and some great matches with the Brass Ring Club, tag belts would be traded and possibly some Freebird rules come into play there.

Maybe they could try to explain to us who they are? Or why they do what they do? Sure, we know they like to dance and whatnot, but we don't know anything about their characters. We have no reason to like or dislike them. I find them confusing. Are you guys just super happy? Are you preachers? Are you some weird motivational speaker group that visits high schools (because that's what they remind me of) or are you high on cocaine and have too much energy. Their biggest problem is that the fans are indifferent, which is the worst reaction you can get. It's really corny and their characters aren't fleshed out at all. Hell, 3 Man Band had more character development.
I feel like New Day could be a big deal IF they did it right. Doesn't even have to be heel (because everyone knows that all black men in wrestling have to be angry, racist, heels) but give people a reason to care one way or another. You have three talented guys together it makes no sense for them to be this uninteresting.

So what you're saying is...they need even more black guys? (or more cowbell?) I honestly feel like they're fine as constructed, they just need an identity shift. Since Woods was so obsessed with screaming 'It's Morphin' Time!', wearing the Black Ranger shirt, etc. we can make them a mega-geek, meta-cool team. They could cosplay as different famous 'teams' each week from the Avengers to the X-Men and MMPR. If one of those identities, or a 'faux' comic group latches on, (like Cena trying out the Vanilla Ice gimmick, Sandow impersonating Miz) then let them run with it. They can be a modern day equivalent of the Spirit Squad (that people want to watch) and the Hurricane. The three of them have all the talent in the world, they just haven't yet clicked with the audience. WWE wants to be culturally relevant and hip, let three of their youngest talents give being pop culturally relevant a shot. |
