I def went with Batista on this one. I get they were trying to build Cena but SD was loaded with stars at the time (Taker, Angle, JBL, Booker, Eddie, Rey, Van Dam) and I think they certainly could have given us a better main event for Mania 21, as well as an end to JBL's awesome near year long reign then to just have Cena come out and walk over him in less than 8 minutes. Batista was on fire dating back to around Survivor Series 04. People were dying to see him turn on Triple H, can't say I felt the same way for the Cena/WWE Title reign. It reminds me of the Roman Reigns situation going on now. Cena left for movies in late 04, came back for a second, then left again. And in the time he was gone, it killed all momentum he had going for him from Wrestlemania XX to Summer 04. Its a shame Batista got hurt in beginning of 06, because when he came back the magic just wasn't there. Nobody cared to see him fight Finlay, Regal, Khali, etc… over the next year or so. I agree it's a shame batista got hurt when he did. I thought he had really won over the fans by the end of '05 and had a ton of momentum. Then he got hurt and never seemed to gain that steam back. He was still a top guy but just seemed like another top guy instead of "the man."

That injury was at the absolute worst time and he really never got back to that level until his heel turn.

JBL was my favourite so knowing that Cena was going to be the next WWE Champion, I wasn't too keen on him. Batista was a kicking ass, taking names kind of person whereas Cena was just a white rapper that I couldn't get into.

I was a Batista guy. Not that I hated Cena then or anything, just I felt Batista was better built to the main event and World Title, and he had 3 amazing matches with Triple H, where as Cena had JBL to work with. Couldn't have said it better myself.

This is a hard choice because I really like both these guys around that time, but if I had to choose, than John Cena would be the guy I like the best.

Truthfully, I never bought into either guy.
Funny this thread caught my eye. Currently watching New Year's Revolution 2006, and in the Chamber match the crowd is mercilessly booing everything Cena does.

I loved both, my Cena hate didnt start until late 06-early 07 This. I started getting bored of Cena around WM 23 & Batista around the middle of '07, but I loved both guys in '05.

Been a Cena guy since his debut on Smackdown in 2002. Think that's how I'll always be.

I never liked facetista. The guy was born to be a heel.

Batista was on fire from Late 04-Late 05. I only started souring on him as a face once he returned in 06.
But my favourite Batista era is no doubt the 09/10 Heeltista era.

Neither. I was much more into Benoit, Michaels, Hunter, etc.
I've hated Cena since his days with B2 and Batista since Flair "brought" him "in", after being D-Von's deacon.

Let me point this out first. Batista and John Cena's ascension was organic. When Batista was in Evolution, he had the makings of a main eventer. John Cena had matches against the likes of Kurt Angle and The Undertaker giving him the rub in 2003. Come 2004, it was becoming clear the WWE had big plans for both Cena and Batista. When Cena defeated the Big Show at WrestleMania XX to capture the United States Championship. This meant that they wanted Cena to hold a secondary championship during his ascension. Now Batista, who was the muscle of Evolution had just about had it with Triple H hogging the spotlight.
Come 2005, both men were on the verge of becoming world champions. Of the two, I felt Batista was more ready than Cena. The build for Triple H/Batista was well done whereas the build for JBL/John Cena had a bit left to be desired. If I were to pick one man who I was more into, it would be Batista. In 2005, a lot of fans were just about tired seeing Triple H as a world champion on RAW. JBL was just there. There wasn't much of a build for JBL/Cena at WrestleMania 21.

He got totally hung out to dry by the crowd at WM22 against HHH. Hunters theory that Jericho and then Angle "simply weren't good enough heels" went out the window that night......

That theory has always been nonsense... and the fact that H allegedly thought that and then acted the way he did during his program with Cena is just embarrassing. No character in wrestling has ever been more infuriating than Cool Heel HHH. Except Cena.

Batista. Loved everyone in Evolution and the way Batista turned was fantastic. With Cena I was never a fan of the white rapper crap. It took a while to appreciate Cena.

If it was 04 I would of easily said John Cena, but I was more of a Batista fan then John Cena back in 05 as Batista sold me as a main eventer more. And plus Smackdown was more enjoyable to watch than Raw. I started to dislike Batista when he was feuding with Eddie Guerrero as I was rooting for Eddie to win the title.

So very true.....I still firmly believe Rey's title win should have been given another 10 minutes(and HHHs entrance f*cking shortened) and it should have went on last. Rey got screwed at WM22.

All I have to say is I was genuinely shocked when Triple H jobbed via submission against John Cena. I try not to look back at 2006 at times.
