On Saturday night, I was in Pittsburgh celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Despite that, I consumed no alcohol at any point. Anyway, I go to this small dive bar that was over crowded, you could barely move. Me and another friend find a corner, here's where the problem began.
I ended up standing in front of a door, my back was towards it so I couldn't see the sign reading, "Do Not Block Door." The bouncer who said he owned the bar said, (In a hardass tone) "Can you read?" pointing at the sign. I read it silently and walk away from the door, no longer blocking it. Bouncer goes behind the door to get something, my friend closes the door because the bouncer left it opened. We didn't know it, but that act locked the door. The boucher banged on the door, then busted through it. Afterwards he gets in my face yelling (also in a hardass tone) "You think you're funny, blocking my door?" Keep in mind I was no longer in front of it, my friend said "He didn't do anything." The bouncer leaves, and we think nothing of it.
A few minutes later, the bouncer returns with another guy, who was bigger, that guy knocks a drink from my friends hand he pushes him out of the bar. The bouncer then picks me up and puts me in a near choke-hold and carriers me out of the bar, while I tell him "I didn't block your door." We were given no verbal warning that they were going to kick us out, they just physically did so.
I'm no lawyer, but I definitely believe excessive force was used. Thoughts?

Absolutely, he was way over the line, especially considering you didn't do anything.
I'd sue.

It was unnecessary but since there were no major injuries I'm not too sure how much you could sue for.

I've always thought nothing good will ever come from hanging out in a bar.

Bouncing seems to be a job for grown up bullies. They have power they like to use and abuse. I'm sure there are good ones, but there are plenty of crappy ones - just like cops and security guards.

Honestly? grow a pair and move on. What is suing you going to get you? nothing but a headache and more trouble than its worth for a few bucks. That's what's wrong with this country now.

I agree totally with this. It's not like the guy was harmed, or hurt, or beat up by the bouncer. Clearly the bouncer wasn't sure and was probably just protecting the bar and the people in it and wasn't gonna take any chance.

I've done security work. Its high level stress on the security. So, we tend to deal with issues quick, before they snowball. Sometimes, we get physical, quick, but, it gets you out of the door. The thing is, once you are ejected, and you try to re enter, thays when crap gets real. Most of the time, you get hit with trespassing, and a cop will add public intoxication. Beat decision is either avoid bars/ crowded bars, and when asked to leave, LEAVE.

"Excessive Force" is a term that gets thrown around WAY too often.
Not to mention it doesn't apply to bouncers as there is no use of force continuum for them.
Anyway, put yourself in their shoes. Would YOU want to deal with a thousand drunk idiots at a bar on St. Patrick's Day weekend?

why did you guys close the door? if they left it open then it was open for a reason.
I'm not saying he was in the right but just letting it go seems like the best option. The bouncer probably deals with wise asses all the time and misunderstood the situation. Especially if it was crowded and loud, then it's extremely easy for them to misunderstand the situation.

I think that this is the part that probably set the bartender/owner off. In his eyes, on that night, everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Did they overreact? Absolutely. But I don't think you would have a case in court. It'd be your word against theirs. There argument would probably be some BS that you and/or your friend were drunk at their bar for St. Patrick's day. Unfortunately not a lot you could probably do about that.

I guess excessive force was used. My advise for next time is if you are in a bar and an employee leaves a door open, you guys should leave it be.
I used to work at a restaurant and I know sometimes people leave doors open for a reason.
I remember one time I was delivering a catering order to a school. I had to make multiple trips up and down a flight of stairs and the door only opened from the inside. So I left the door open so I could go in and out quick. Each time I went back to the car to get some more trays, some idiot kept closing the door. So each time I had to knock on the door and wait for someone to open it for me. And each time I knocked the person that opened the door gave me an attitude and said "Just leave the door open next time".
Moral of the story is if you don't own the place or work there, don't concern yourself with their business. If the door wasn't supposed to be open, that's their problem.

He was a little excessive it seems but coming from someone that has done their fair share of bouncing, it can be a very frustrating job. The amount of drunken idiots that they deal with is usually about 75% of the customers. In most cases, it's safe to assume anything and throw someone out if it seems possible that they could be a potential problem. Not really much you can do about it other than take it as a lesson learned and don't stand in front of the door next time lol

Pro tip. Don't close the door. And I just know there are little details omitted here.

my suggestion is to not over think it, and in the future if a bouncer is giving you trouble just leave the bar in advance. it's not worth battling for your rights - bouncers are typically large, uneducated, frustrated people who are going to turn things physical far before they have to be. i've been escorted from a few bars for silly reasons, but it would be far sillier to argue them - you're in their zone. act accordingly or don't go to bars. sad truth.
