"Excessive Force" is a term that gets thrown around WAY too often. Not to mention it doesn't apply to bouncers as there is no use of force continuum for them.Anyway, put yourself in their shoes. Would YOU want to deal with a thousand drunk idiots at a bar on St. Patrick's Day weekend? Yeah that's what I thought too. They can pretty much get away with anything they want can they not? I mean, they can't just go around openly assaulting people without cause but "excessive force" implies there is a continuum or standard/policy they have to abide by which, in the case of bouncers, there is none.

I'm not going to try to sue obviously, too much of a pain and it's usually the bars word taken anyway. I just felt this was unnecessary. I simple "leave" or even a "Get the out of here" would have been fine, I didn't appreciate being nearly put in a chokehold for a stupid misunderstanding. Bouncer seemed like a guy that wanted to be a dick for no reason, and was probably somebody who would get their ass kicked in a one on one fight, so he wanted to pick on people who couldn't touch him to make him feel like a hardass. Just because bouncer's have authority, doesn't mean they should abuse it and even get physical when it's not necessary.

However, if you didn't get hurt then just chalk it up as a misunderstanding and be done with it.

Sorry for what you had to experience, but that's Pittsburgh for you.

#1 You're not gonna sue because you pretty much have no case. Its "he said/he said" type situation which will just be a waste of money and thrown out of court.
#2 If you feel you were treated unfairly, make it known to friends, co workers, facebook, bar reviews etc and dont ever frequent the bar again. Costing them money is the only way you're going to have any effect on them
#3 Pull an Arn Anderson...Sit outside the bar until the bouncer leaves. Follow him to his house. Then sit outside of his house and wait for him to go somewhere else (like a grocery store) then follow him to the grocery store and take out his knees with a tire iron.

While it wasnt "excessive force" I could agree that it was a kind of out of line of them. But it was St. Pattys Day and as said, its a day of Drunken Idiots.
A bouncer gets paid to handle situations at their discretion. Not play Sherlock Holmes and get to the bottom of it. If you left there without any actual damage just take it as it is and move on. Never be that guy trying to sue. If anything, express your displeasure with the Owner, and try to get free food or something..

depends on where you are - here in ontario, canada bouncers have to follow a pretty specific set of protocol and laws. of course, those are broken all the time, as are many laws.

1) It sounds like the door was very clearly marked "Do Not Block", but you failed to pay attention to your surroundings. (It's amazing how little people pay attention to their surroundings...) Because you did this, he probably thought you were already being a dick.
2) When he went in that door (if this is indeed the same door you were blocking) and then your friend shut it behind him, he was probably 100% sure that you were being a dick. Why anyone would do this I have no idea, by the way. If the door doesn't close on its own and he made no attempt to close it, then it's obvious he wanted it to remain open. Your friend, not being an employee, shouldn't be touching the doors.
3) As others have said, they did not exceed a use of force continuum...so no, there was no excessive force.
4) No, you're not going to sue...t'would be pretty much the definition of a frivolous lawsuit if you did.
5) I'm almost 100% sure we're missing some details to this story.
6) Him having someone help him excuse you from the bar has nothing to do with how big his balls are. It's that he doesn't know what you're capable of and he wants any and all backup so he doesn't suffer from injuries he received dealing with some drunk dumbass.
