Im mainly watching these ppvs on the network because Rude was pretty much the top guy back then but im surprised how good the quality in wrestling is. Ive enjoyed the majority of matches ive seen thus far and there was real top talent around at this period. Much better than all those crap main events in the late 90s with Hogan and such.
Rick Rude, Ron Simmons, Vader, Windham and many more so if you're a fan of those guys go back and check out the ppvs from that era. Some brilliant stuff!

Great period all around.
91-93 WCW is the crap.

I KNEW of the NWA, then WCW, through various magazines, and the PPV VHS tapes my local blockbuster used to have. but around here, we didn't start getting TBS until around summer ' 91, so my first actual, real-time exposure to WCW was during the early 90's, so that time will always be special for me. I remember one of the first shows I got to watch recapping how Lex Luger beat Barry Windham to become the new WCW World Champion, and thinking to my self " What happened to Flair?!"
like mrassbillygunn said, there was a TON of top talent in the first few years of that decade wrestling for WCW at various points:
Sting Lex Luger Ric Flair Arn Anderson Sid Vicious Cactus Jack Rick Steiner Scott Steiner Ron Simmons Big Van Vader Barry Windham Dustin Rhodes Larry Zbysko Davey Boy Smith Booker T Stevie Ray Brian Pillman Steve Austin Rick Rude Bobby Eaton Johnny B. Badd Kevin Nash ( as Vinnie Vegas) Scott Hall (as Diamond Studd) Michael Hayes Jimmy Garvin Brad Armstrong Paul Orndorff Kevin Sullivan Lord Steven Regal
...it's amazing how much of this roster, and really the whole landscape, of WCW started to change in 1994, with the arrival of Hogan.

one other thing - while the WWF was really starting it's push to be entertainment and the real outrageous and cartoonish characters starting in the very early 90's (not that they didn't do it before, but it hit overdrive in the 90's), WCW still billed and promoted itself as the place for WRESTLING, and still valued the sport above the entertainment during this time, which was a welcome breath of fresh air to someone like me who was already starting to get a little disenfranchised by the kiddie product the WWF was starting to head towards. another thing that would change once Bischoff and Hogan took over ( The Yeti and Teleporting Hogan, anyone?).

Once Ric Flair left WCW, and they brought in Rick Rude and started the Dangerous Alliance, WCW was on a serious roll!
Sting vs. Luger, Sting vs. Vader, Rude vs. Sting, Rude vs. Steamboat, War Games 92, Steiners vs. Anderson/Eaton, Windham vs. Austin, Simmons vs. Vader, Simmons vs. Barbarian, Orndorff vs. Cactus, Cactus vs. Vader, Steamboat/Douglas vs. Blondes, Steamboat/Douglas vs. Windham/Pillman, Vader vs. Bulldog, Rhodes vs. Windham, Windham vs. Steamboat, just.... wow!
Early WCW was great, and it was great even in early 1994 too.
Steamboat vs. Flair, Vader vs. Sting, Rude vs. Sting, Flair vs. Sting, Steamboat vs. Austin.... then came in Hogan.
And Duggan, and Earthquake, and Honky, and Beefcake... and then WCW became a shell of its old self.

With Watts taking over the booking, it definitely changed from the norm. The no top rope rule, seriously pissed off fans, since Pillman was getting disqualified around the horn...but the no outside and no weapons rules made heels have to really get some heat...rather than getting it "cheaply" as Watts believed. He brought over his guys, thats for sure...and booked strangley. There was good matches, but everyone was unhappy backstage...he made them all stay to watch every match...no leaving early. Fans were going away in droves....and he pushed the heck out of his son.
Loved Windham, Dustin, and the Dangerous Alliance during this time.
I always wished they didnt drop the Cactus vs Steamboat angle they started, then mysteriously ignored.
It missed Flair...and the fans would chant it constantly at events...Jessie and Tony were always embarassed because they couldnt ignore it.
Waaaaaaayyyy better in ring action than WWF up until Hogan got there.

Absolutely, WCW gets a really unfair reputation, sure, the last few years of WCW were bad, but let's not let revisionist history sway us. WCW had,at least in my eyes, a superior talent pool up until say 97ish, and even then, WCW had a stronger in ring game, but WWF clearly had characters and a formula that got people's attention. But 1990 to say 93 was a stellar time period, sure not everything was peaches and cream, you had some bland workers, some silly storylines, and what have you. But there was a ton of gold between those ropes. Doc and Gordy, Steiners, Road Warriors, Arn, Flair, Steamboat, Austin, Dangerous Alliance, Midnight Express, Rock and Roll Express, Sting, Vader, Cactus, and many more. If you have the Network, please check out some shows from that time period, you'll be blown away.

I agree and have been saying the same for awhile. Take the first 3 PPVs in 1992- Superbrawl, Beach Blast & WrestleWar were all stellar events Top to bottom plus the Clashes in between were solid as well.
Sure early 90s wcw had its bad moments like every year in any company but once Hogan came in mid 95 while the production/mainstream increased the quality nosedived.

You can add Halloween Havoc 92, Starrcade 92 and SuperBrawl 3 into that list of great PPVs too. I thought that the Clash of the Champions in 1992 and 1993 were not on par - if not better - than the PPVs that were out that year for WCW. And that says a lot because the WCW PPVs were pretty entertaining!

That was some great times. Except for the whole over the top-rope DQ and no off the top maneuvers. Well those and the whole Paul Orndorff with Gary Spivey thing. Oh and electrocuting Abdullah the Butcher. But yeah... I enjoyed (most) of early 90'd wCw.

Jan '91 to July '94 in WCW is some of the best pro wrestling you'll ever see. From in ring work to story lines to name/star power. The only thing I think that is bigger is WWF from March '87 to Jan '93

couldn't agree more with the other posts. WCW was awesome at this point. It just had that edge that wwf didn't have at that point. it funny that a lot of the wcw 91 -94 wrestlers were part of the Attitude era for wwe a few year later - Austin, cactus, vader, pillman and of course the future ECW's Paul E etc all young hungry for the spotlight pushing themselves. Just goes to show that with a bit of shuffling wcw could potentially have been beating wwe a lot earlier that they did, although to be fair it was Hogan and friends that started the spike in buy rates for the most part.
Defo recommend everyone to check out this period on the network - Wargames 92 and Beach blast were 2 of my all time favourites! would, love to be able to watch some wcw Saturday night from that period.

IMO, the WWF started to suck after the Ultimate Warrior left but WCW kept my interest in wrestling in the early to mid 90s. There was a lot of great talent during that time like Sting, Big Van Vader, Ric Flair, Stars & Stripes, Pretty Wonderful, etc. Hell, I even liked Arachnaman.
