I don't have a GPS. I mostly have decent navigation skills and usually know where I'm going. But in a couple of months, I have a trip out of state that's return destination will be bringing me deep downtown where I'm not that familiar. So I'm looking for a decent GPS system. I'd like something no more than $80 but I'm more than happy to spend about $50 on it. I know nothing about what I'm even looking for. School me.

I don't have a smartphone. I barely use a cell phone, so I have a tracphone just so I have a phone number to give people. Costs me about $6 a month. Plenty of minutes and texts but almost no data.

Is there anyway you can just pre-plan now with places such as google maps, mapquest, etc?

I always wanted a tomtom because you could download new voices (like Homer Simpson and Eddie Izzard, whom I wanted). I never got around to buying one and now I just use my phone. I've got my phone and my satellite radio in my car, I can't justify adding another device.

Best bet is with a smartphone as others have stated.
GoogleMaps is constantly updated, current and accurate.
Actually buying a GPS usually leads to outdated maps and there are fees to have it updated.

Here is a great GPS that's pretty close to your price range. The best part is it comes with LIFETIME map updates. www.amazon.com/Garmin-5-Inch-Portable-Vehicle-Lifetime/dp/B00AXZWG8Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430064250&sr=8-1&keywords=garmin+gps

If You have a data plan on your cell phone than it's Ok to use your GPS on your phone. GPS on phones use a lot of data I believe. Back to what I said about getting a Garmin, Garmin's are used in practically every new Cessna today

Back to what I said about getting a Garmin, Garmin's are used in practically every new Cessna today I can't speak for other phones but Windows Phone has a GPS app that allows you to download maps from any area/state/etc you want and you can use it and get directions without using any data.

My phone is a Tracphone. I'm not interested in upgrading my phone and getting an expensive contract with a data plan simply for a GPS. What sense would that make, adding a $200 a month bill indefinitely? I barely use a phone at all. I use my current phone as an MP3 player more than as a phone. I costs me $6 a month. If you can find me an iPhone with an unlimited data plan for $6 a month, I'll gladly switch. Right now, the 180 texts, 180 minutes, and 180 MB of data for three months at a time is more than enough for me. I've got a huge backlog of rolled over texts.

T-Mobile is fantastic, depending on where you live. You'll pay more than $6 a month, but all of their plans come with unlimited talk, text and data. So say you get the 1gb of LTE data plan, after you hit your limit your data shows down but it's unlimited with no extra fees. Plus most music streaming services don't count against your limit, which makes it an even better deal. You can also qualify for free services from Rhapsody and/or Mix Radio, but I think Mix is only for Windows Phones. Speaking of phones, you only make monthly payments on your phone until its paid off. As soon as the phone is yours, the bill goes down.

I can't really give you a great recommendation for a GPS that cheap, Schneider. Most likely your best bet will be to peruse Amazon/Best Buy/one of the big GPS sites (Garmin, Magellan, TomTom etc) and try to find a refurbished one. Nothing wrong with refurbished, that doesn't always mean it was broken it could have just been reset if the old owner upgraded, but nothing that will be ANY kind of good and not drop your satellite signal and the like, will be that cheap without buying it refurbished. So maybe you can look into that.
