Im looking into buying a new car. So far I've either had a family member's car or a car I paid cash for. I've never actually walked into a dealership and bought a brand new car. Any advice from those who have purchased a new car?
I walked into a dealership yesterday. I had looked at a vehicle online and scheduled a test drive. I got there and the vehicle I saw online was and wasnt there. They had what I wanted but it had all kinds of add ons that I didnt want. I felt it was a ploy to get me in there, they post one online and when you are there they present you with something slightly different to up the final value.
I was looking at a truck online and when I went in there they showed me a truck like the one I wanted but it had a tow bar, a moon roof, and turn markers on the side view mirrors. Those are all add ons that are nice but they up the price and are things I didnt really want.

Mattel make cars?! I'm not entirely sure but I'm pretty sure they're going to do that. They want to make as much money as possible as the salesmen get commissions based off of what they sell I believe. Hopefully someone else knows a little more.

Lol Yeah, I just noticed I posted this in the wrong place. But yes Mattel does make cars, hotwheels, Matchbox, disney cars, however I meant actual real cars. Can a mod please move this to the lounge?

Just bought a car myself, never tell them if you have a budget. Do plenty of online research for prices, insurance etc, don't be shy to haggle!

People don't buy hot wheels from a dealership do they?

Try to bring a buddy or something just so that you have someone there to back you up and try to get a discount. Never pay the sticker price and I never pay for extras unless you really want it. I decline all the special stuff that they try to sell when closing in on the deal.
It takes a while to find that car that you really want. I put in a few hours of research just to find the car I liked. Good luck!

Just bought a car myself, never tell them if you have a budget. Do plenty of online research for prices, insurance etc, don't be shy to haggle! My first outing was not a good one. I looked online at the dealer's inventory. It had what I wanted and it had what they wanted as a down payment plus how much the monthly payment would be. When I sat down to talk about price the numbers were all different from what they posted online. They wanted more than twice what was online for a down payment and twice as much for a monthly payment. And the total price was higher on the truck. I asked about the hike in price and was told the price online was for military vets only, or people who got a coupon in the mail. I was trying to get the monthly price they listed online. I thought I could easily pay that monthly cost PLUS some extra to pay the truck off faster. But when I saw what they wanted a month that would have left me little room to add more towards what I give them a month. It took me by surprise but I also thought the higher price might have been due to the add ons the truck I test drove had. I'll eventually buy that truck I think im just going to be walking into multiple dealerships first to see which will sell it for the lowest price. I was reading online that Spring is the worst time to buy a new car but I want what I want.

You should definitely shop around multiple dealers, and compare their prices and inventory. Don't be afraid to let them know. They will definitely try and pull bait and switch tactics on you so don't let them. If you have a monthly payment price, or total vehicle price amount in mind, don't be afraid to stand firm with that, and tell them to meet it or walk. I've had a few dealers cave as I was walking to my car to leave. Do a lot of research on costs of the vehicle and the upgrades are. If you do research, you can find out what the approximate dealer cost is, to help you know where to work from in negotiations. I like to lay all the cards on the table, and say, I know your cost is X. End of the month is a good time for deals usually as they are trying to meet sales goals for the month. It's a hassle, but if you work hard, a lot of times you can get a really good deal, and sometimes get even more upgrades. Unfortunately, it's rare that dealers have vehicles on the lot without many of the upgrades in them. If you end up ordering one, or getting one delivered from another dealer, you won't get as good of a deal. Sometimes you have to compromise to get the right deal, but again, there is no reason for you to buy something you don't want or pay too much either.

This may sound weird, but go on a day that the weather is bad. Usually, when the weather is bad, they're more willing to deal, since business is slower.
On a side note. Wouldn't them advertising a car, then saying they don't have it, and offering a higher tiered model be considered bait and switch?

I've been having some good years as far as work goes so I wanted to treat myself to getting a brand new car, or in this case truck. I don't look at it as an investment in which I want to see a return. I just want to treat myself. I look around at all the toys I have and I think, I probably could have paid off a new truck or a couple of new cars with all the money I've put into toys over the years.

Car buying sucks. Period.
Car dealers are an absolute pain.
It's a horrible experience.
I always had used cars until the truck I bought last June brand new.

I just meant dealing with them is a pain in the ass. It's just that back-and-forth nonsense while playing around with numbers that I hate.
