So I'm driving home from my girlfriends house and as soon as I turned onto my street I see flashing lights in my rear view. It threw me off because I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong. I wasn't speeding, I knew my taillights were working because I had just gotten them replaced like a week before and I had my lights on, so what was I doing wrong? Anyway, since it was my first time getting pulled over I was a little nervous so I had everything ready for him before I lowered my window. Right away he asks for my license and registration before telling me what I did wrong. He also asked me for my insurance ID card which threw me off a little too because I know they never ask for that. After looking at all my papers he tells me my driver side headlight is out. At this time I'm still shocked I was pulled over so I'm not really thinking straight but when he walked to his car to run my license It clicked in my brain that I had been driving this entire time with both my headlights on. Neither one of them were out. So here I am sitting in the car waiting for the officer to come back feeling really confused and not sure what to do. I was worried he was going to write me a ticket for something that didn't happen but at the same time I didn't want to argue with him because I've never been pulled over before and I was literally a block away from my house and just wanted to go inside. So he comes back and tells me to just get it fixed without writing me a ticket. I tell him goodnight and that was it.
I'm still confused about what happened, did he make up an excuse to pull me over to try and write me a ticket for something else? If that were the case why would he choose to say that the headlight was out when I clearly can see that it isn't? My initial reaction was to just believe him because I was nervous about being pulled over but again you could clearly see that my headlight wasn't out. It was also 1AM so maybe he thought I was drinking and driving? Anyway, I figured you guys might get a kick out of my little story or maybe want to share some of your own. The guy wasn't a dick or anything so I'm not angry about the experience just confused.

1. They should ALWAYS ask to see your insurance card.
2. Are you absolutely positive both headlights were working? Did you physically get out of the car and check them when you got home?

There's a certain intersection in a small town nearby where cop cars sit all the time. You ask anybody about that town and the first and only thing they'll tell you is how annoying the police are. Anyway, one night a friend and I dropped off a mutual friend after work (around 1AM) and sure enough, got pulled over by an officer just waiting on the infamous intersection. He said my friends license plate light was out and let us go.
So what it sounds like to me is that a small percentage of lazy police officers prefer to pull anybody and everybody over in order to hypothetically increase the odds they hit the jackpot. If you don't have major violations then they let you go and warn you of some minor infraction which you may or may not have committed. Not saying all police officers operate this way, and not even saying this happened to you. But I'm certain it does happen. A family friend of mine was a city cop and would openly tell me he pulled over any vehicle he saw with a New York license plate. One day he got somebody with $20,000 worth of drugs in their trunk so I'm sure in his mind the ends justified the means.

Did you physically get out of the car and check them when you got home? yeah dude, 100% positive. I tested them 3 times. I tested my brights too. Even the default lights that are on when I don't even have to turn my lights on were working. Plus I had my lights on the entire drive home and would definitely have noticed if only one of them was giving off light in pitch black at 1AM. And I've been in the car with people who have been pulled over and I've always only seen them ask for license and registration, never the insurance ID card. Hell just the other day I was in the car with my girlfriend and she got pulled over because her inspection was up and the cop didn't even ask her for her license. He just said get the inspection fixed and let us go.

Could be just looking for someone and stopping random cars and checking them out.
I once got pulled over just around the corner from where I live and the cop asked if I had a slingshot in my car. I said no and he said they had reports of someone driving around the neighborhood shooting a slingshot at houses.
It was annoying but being stopped didn't hurt me or anyone.

This wouldn't have happened if you had stayed home and napped.

A couple of years ago, my friend was pulled over in the same general spot two times within the span of a couple of weeks with me, and a couple of other friends in the car. On both occasions, there was no speeding involved, no issues with her car, nothing. The cop asked for all of our licenses, not just hers. He didn't tell us why we were being pulled over either time, but he was courteous so it wasn't a huge deal, just quite strange. I didn't know if maybe they were looking for a car similar to hers or something.

Be Lucky you weren't doing anything wrong. Sounds like he was trying to set you up TO do something wrong out of nervousness. I had two state troopers with me from behind in the middle of the night on the highway. They both drove erratically and were high beaming me and scaring the $ht out of me. I eventually pulled over on the wrong side of the highway because I got so nervous and they started screaming and yelling at me over their intercoms. I pulled to the other side of the highway and they proceeded to bombard me with insults and tickets. Also, what the is an Insurance ID card. And why don't I have one

And why don't I have one When you pay for your car insurance policy, they will either mail you a physical card to keep in your car, or send you a digital card to print out to keep on you. A lot of it is in their records digitally now, but may not be updated. You can get a ticket if you do not have proof of insurance on you while driving.

Police pull people over after a certain time just to smell them.
True story.

You should have jumped out and ran. Then you'd have been famous and gotten in the news every day.
Seriously though, like was mentioned above they were probably looking for someone and a witness couldnt give a 100% accurate description so they did random stops.

In Ohio, proof of insurance is required. I've had this happen to me before as well except it was my license plate light that was supposedly out. (It wasn't btw.) The police officer was friendly but was pulling me over for essentially no reason at all. He also took the ID of the girl that was with me and was asking all kinds of questions regarding where I was coming from and going. (I was in my own quiet, safe neighborhood.) At the end of it, he told me to have a good night and I had to end up asking him why he even pulled me over to which he replied that my license plate light was out but it's "just a warning this time". Gee, thanks for the warning after I had to ask why I was being pulled over before he left without even telling me. There are some really great cops and I would rather have the police around than to have no police at all, but it's pretty sad when most people's immediate reaction when seeing a cop is to make sure they aren't doing anything illegal (driving-wise) rather than just feeling safe that they're around.

I think sometimes cops will just pull you over to screw with you.....like to see if they can scare you into running or maybe they'll get lucky and actually find something bad.
I've never been pulled over, but I know a lot of people have for seemingly nothing.

My girlfriend got pulled over once and gave the cop her credit card instead of her liscense on accident. Then the cop replied with sorry ma'am I don't need your credit card and I laughed.

Yeah, I was in a fender bender a few months back and got a ticket because my ID card wasn't up to date. I had to dispute it which is a pain in the ass because you have to wait a few days to get a proof of insurance letter in the mail from your insurance company. I think the ticket was for 80 bucks but only 30 if you dispute it.
