So I'm driving home from my girlfriends house and as soon as I turned onto my street I see flashing lights in my rear view. It threw me off because I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong. I wasn't speeding, I knew my taillights were working because I had just gotten them replaced like a week before and I had my lights on, so what was I doing wrong? Anyway, since it was my first time getting pulled over I was a little nervous so I had everything ready for him before I lowered my window. Right away he asks for my license and registration before telling me what I did wrong. He also asked me for my insurance ID card which threw me off a little too because I know they never ask for that. After looking at all my papers he tells me my driver side headlight is out. At this time I'm still shocked I was pulled over so I'm not really thinking straight but when he walked to his car to run my license It clicked in my brain that I had been driving this entire time with both my headlights on. Neither one of them were out. So here I am sitting in the car waiting for the officer to come back feeling really confused and not sure what to do. I was worried he was going to write me a ticket for something that didn't happen but at the same time I didn't want to argue with him because I've never been pulled over before and I was literally a block away from my house and just wanted to go inside. So he comes back and tells me to just get it fixed without writing me a ticket. I tell him goodnight and that was it. I'm still confused about what happened, did he make up an excuse to pull me over to try and write me a ticket for something else? If that were the case why would he choose to say that the headlight was out when I clearly can see that it isn't? My initial reaction was to just believe him because I was nervous about being pulled over but again you could clearly see that my headlight wasn't out. It was also 1AM so maybe he thought I was drinking and driving? Anyway, I figured you guys might get a kick out of my little story or maybe want to share some of your own. The guy wasn't a dick or anything so I'm not angry about the experience just confused. He may have been looking for someone. He may have been doing a random road side check. Maybe one of your lights is dimmer than the other? Maybe you have some loose wires connected to your lights so they cut out randomly?

Police are gonna do what they want. Time to accept it and move on.
Back in February I was standing in my front yard waiting for my stepfather to pick me up so we could work on an airplane. Low and behold a cop stopped and without even saying "hey" or "how's it going?" He just immediately says to me "I need to see some ID "
I looked at him and said "why?" Because it threw me off considering I've lived here for over 7 years with no problems. Well, me being the hard-headed jabroni that I am, I wasn't for one second going to comply becAuse of his tone with me and immediately needing to see identification.
Needless to say, we were talking in circles because he wouldn't give me a reason that I needed to prove who I was. I finally just told him "you know what? F it, here you go." And handed him my driver's license.
After that he became my best friend and told me that someone called about a suspicious looking person standing in a yard. So, someone with nothing to do decided to call the police on me. But, if they were as nosey as they think they were, they would've seen me out there with my dog, going in and out of my house to grab a cup of coffee or to put the dog up.
So, as I stated to begin with, they're gonna do what they want because they only have so much to go on.

I've been pulled over for talking on a cell phone before...when my phone was closed in my center console...so yeah, cops pull people over innocent people in an effort to trap them all the time. I've also been tailgated really bad and flashed brights. I'm never doing anything wrong. These bad apples are the reason I hate cops, I always assume they are out to get you when they are bored. In fact, I am less inclined to deal with cops even in an emergency because I assume they will find a way to get me into trouble. You're supposed to be able to trust cops, and I know there are really good cops, but I've only ever encountered one. When you (I) only run into the failed high school QB who still likes to be a bully its very easy to be mistrustful.

well I tested my lights again last night and they are still working properly so I'm just gonna chalk it up to he thought for whatever reason at that moment I looked suspicious even though I was doing nothing wrong. I didn't get a ticket and my headlights are fine so it's whatever.

What time was it?
I've been pulled over in quiet areas for no other reason than me seeming suspicious for being out Late.
Cops always ask "can I see your license, registration and proof of insurance"

He may have been looking for someone. He may have been doing a random road side check. Maybe one of your lights is dimmer than the other? Maybe you have some loose wires connected to your lights so they cut out randomly? thinking it probably was one of the first two. I use to have a truck that had a loose wire. I would pull the light assembly out, play with the wires and it would be fine. But as I traveled potholes, speed bumps, breaking short, and other movements would cause the wires to come out of place. Every so often I'd get pulled over for that tail light. I would just walk back behind the truck, tap the light (before the officer saw), and I'd say they looked fine to me.

I was in a very similar situation & might be able to help. My uncle is a cop, so I called him right afterwards & asked him about it.
He told me if a car has been reported stolen somewhere in the area, cops will pull people over if their car could potentially fit the make, model, or color description. They might give you a BS reason for pulling you over (like they did for you, & me) just so they can run the plates to see if there is a positive match. They call it profiling.
I got a written warning, & what tipped my uncle off was that my DL number, make, model, & color was all written wrong. None of the info was correct. That told my uncle he was just BS'ing.

I've tested my lights enough in the past two nights to rule that out but I did consider that initially.

So many myths, misconceptions and misunderstandings about cops.
Most of them wrong.
