Hey guys.
I've always been a fan of pretty much any wrestling I can get my hands on. Each promotion has its own style and they're all presented differently but one big difference in each promotion in the ring. For some reason the look and sound of each ring has always interested me and I'm curious to know which company's ring is your favourite of all time?
There is the WWE/WWF ring with its notoriously stiff canvas and real style ropes. The WWE ring has been pretty much the same style since the 1980's in appearance and sound. Unless you're at a live event the ring is pretty quiet for bumps. It has more of a thud to it than a bounce. It sounded particularly woody and painful to bump on during the attitude era. These days it seems to have much more spring to it. I've never been a huge fan of the WWE ring. It just sounded painful without much give to it, granted it seems to have improved in the last 15 years.
The WCW ring has always been my favourite ring. It was just cleanly presented. Had a really good sound to it, I think due to the lack of microphones underneath it. The sound of bumps were kind of planky, like the canvas could snap at any minute but I liked that haha. The steel cable ropes always looked smart to me and I like the turnbuckles. To me they just had a really smart looking ring.
Towards the end of their days ECW had the most springy and loud ring I've ever seen. It was borderline ridiculous. You don't need to hear every footstep in the ring but in their ring you could. Granted it made the top rope bumps sound absolutely fantastic but wrestlers were just bouncing around all over the place in it. I wasn't a fan. They also shared similar ropes to the WWE rather than the cables. I always found their ring very strange to be honest.
So that's my opener. I could go on for longer but those are the basics and the big three I expect will be covered. Obviously a special shout out to TNA who had the six sided ring which was cool for a while and NJPW, I am a huge fan of their ring. Again very clean sounding.
Bit of an odd topic I know, but sometimes we forget just how important the squared circle is in wrestling. So what are your favourites and why?

NJPW ring is awesome I really dig the color combinations, the turnbuckle pads, and even the advertisements on the mat look pretty clean and almost add to it. The FMW ring is another favorite. Good combination of colors. 1997 ECW ring is my favorite of theirs. And gotta give a mention to the various lucha promotions and TNA, the six sided ring is pretty cool I never really pay attention to how the rings sound, honestly.

I'd say the NJPW ring is my second favourite. It's great.
Nice picture too! The more pictures the better fellas.

I've always liked the original ECW ring simply because of how loud it was when someone landed on it.
But appearance-wise, NJPW all day everyday.

As soon as I read the title of this thread, my first thought was "ECW ring!"
The ECW ring - at least in my opinion - was so springy and bouncy because I think Paul Heyman was rewarding his crew with easy bumps in the ring, since most of the bumps happened outside on the floor and through the arena anyhow.
I also loved the colour of the ECW ring mat from 97 on. That blue colour, it just really stuck out and gave off a nice image.

My favorite ring was the NXT ring, but ever since WWE used that screen ring apron on Raw and Smackdown, my current favorite rings are Raw / Smackdown.

Not a lot of love for the WCW ring so far then? For me it's the classic ring. It's never changed much apart from in colour (that light blue colour was great by the way) since the Crockett days.
The ECW ring definitely stood out. Was one hell of a crash when people landed on it.

Himmy!, the WWE's ring became standard in the 90's, not in the 80's. Back in the 80's, the WWE would have to use specialized rings for cage matches. Not to mention, the size of the rings weren't standard either. Some events would use an 18x18 (used at WrestleMania I) and some even used a 15x15/16x16 (most common in the NWA), and the traditional 20x20 (what the WWE uses today). If you go back and watch old WWE events in the 80's, you'll see the difference in sizes. The rings used in the Attitude Era are harder on the body than today's rings. ππ΅πβοΈ, not sure if you are aware, the rings used for RAW and SmackDown aren't the same. The posts are the biggest givaways. As for my favorite style of rings, damn. I can't pick one that I really like.

From 95-99 the WWF sounded like concrete. Must have been horrible to land on.

I love entrances more cause of it.

From 95-99 the WWF sounded like concrete. Must have been horrible to land on. Jim Ross mentioned on The Ross Report a while back that the rings are vital to the overall safety to the performers. Due to the rings being so hard, Ross wanted to make those rings be a bit more forgiving on the body. In the process, Ross had WWE officials to finally do away with the barred cage. Legend has it, the barred cage was used at SmackDown house shows in 2002. Going back to rings, the WWE used a 15x15/16x16 root ring for the early Shotgun Saturday Night shows. At One Night Stand 2005, the WWE used an 18x18 foot ring. For the 2006 edition of said event, the WWE used their standard 20x20 ring. When the WWE acquired WCW's assets in 2001, it even included the rings. From what I heard, the first ring TNA used was an old WCW ring that was acquired after the WWE had either sold or disposed of them.

I wasn't a big fan of the WCW ring, mostly because the mat was incredibly loose. I remember Flair being put into either a Scorpion Deathlock or Sharpshooter or whatever and he literally had a handful of the mat while he was reaching for the ropes.
Looks-wise, I really dug the way the one used for the first few episodes (if not just the first one) of RAW IS WAR. I seem to recall the mat being super-dark, making it hard to see the action in the ring, which is probably why they switched it to gray shortly thereafter. I also really love the look of the '90s ring they used well into the late-'90s at house shows, with the RWB ropes, vivid WWF logos along the apron, blue steel steps and corner posts...good times.

I love the WWF/WWE rings. Especially due to the turnbuckles and REAL ropes. They are bigger too.
I hated those WCW/ECW cable ropes.

Wasn't ECW and WCW's rings smaller than WWE's rings?

I thought all ring ropes was real ropes, they've always looked the same to me in all promotions, I don't wana sound stupid but what's cable "ropes" and are they different to work, like more or less spring?

I'm not a trained wrestler so I don't know how they are different to work but WWE has always used real ropes while WCW, ECW, TNA uses cables.
