Quick simple question; what happened?!
I whoring out on the Network, the 1997 Raw catalog has finally been uploaded so Im going through it and come to the May 19th episode and two things happen;
1. It seems all but confirmed that its gonna be Austin and Pillman (this had been in the making for weeks rather than this one night) 2. Bret ACTUALLY challenges HBK and the match is made
Soooooo why didn't we get either?

I forget about Austin vs. Pillman. I haven't made it that far into 1997 while re-watching episodes on the network. I can only assume it got dropped and changed to Austin vs. HBK once the match with Bret got cancelled.
I can tell you why the Bret vs. HBK match was cancelled though...
Bret wasn't recovered from his knee injury yet which is why they had the stipulation if Bret couldn't beat HBK in less than 10 minutes that he would never wrestle in the USA again. It was meant to be short to protect Bret due to his injury. Bret was scheduled to win. Believe it or not, Bret backed out of the match because his knee wasn't healed to the point where he felt comfortable performing and he was also having all kinds of issues backstage with HBK.
Bret and Shawn got into a legit fight backstage before Raw in Hartford on June 9th. HBK got his ass kicked of course and threatened to quit. I'm sure this played a role in the match being cancelled also.

Found these and actually just watched a Hart Foundation promo where Pillman actually challenges Austin to a match. I assumed it was the knee injury that mucked things up, but I did remember something being talked about on the HBK/Hart DVD about KOTR97; this is clearly when things are getting heated backstage, and damn good onscreen!!

This is the one I want to know about: I have ZERO recollection of this program and the match never happened. Neither guy was even booked on Summerslam 1997. Now that the 97 Raw episodes are uploaded on the network it might shine some light on this match.

1997 as a whole, left us us with a lot of unexplained answers. Regarding the match changes at the 1997 King of the Ring, injuries had something to do with it.
The legit heat with Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels was really escalating at this time. Remember the Sunny day's promo? I sure do.

I'm re-watching all of the 1997 Raw episodes on the network. Good stuff. I remember a lot but forgot quite a bit also.
I'm 2 weeks past WM 13. The Hart a Foundation just reformed and Bret has been killing it as a heel.

It was a great time and I didn't miss any of it each week on raw or nitro. There was a lot of changing of matches though as you guys have shown. Bret and Shawn was about as gripping as it could be but man I started to hate Shawn. There was no way with his arrogance that he could stay a face as it wasn't the old cool arrogance, it was legit I wanna punch him heat - as bret proved! Lots of injuries as well which changed booking plans, much faster pace than in previous years. Good times!

My guess is that Vince thought Sid was gonna be there for it. (a softball game must have came up that day) I remember watching an old Raw from early 1996 and they hyped Bam Bam Bigelow for the 96 Royal Rumble, and his last WWE match was at Survivor Series 95 against Goldust. So I am guess that a lot of times, Vince just assumes that they will be at the event and gets the promo shots all ready for it, but then it never happens.

I was gonna say; Sid was gone two week after Mania; the is that all about?! When he returned on RAW, the announcers said something about being injured. Low back maybe? I found some information about Sid in 1997. The original plan was for him and Bret Hart to work at match at In Your House: Revenge of the Taker. Sid was indeed injured and thus, the plan was changed from Sid/Bret Hart to Steve Austin/Bret Hart. As far as him leaving in the Summer of 1997, Sid was involved in a car accident with 2 Cold Scorpio, Phil Lafon, and the late Doug Furnas on June 15th, 1997. Phil Lafon recounts the above car accident in a piece SLAM Wrestling did back in 2012: slam.canoe.com/Slam/Wrestling/2012/03/04/pf-19457996.htmlHope this answers some questions regarding Sid and his status in 1997.

Didn't Austin say he didn't want to wrestle Pillman because of drug use from his injury? Or am I making this up

Yes, I remember that now! From what I remember, Sid went to either open or close the sun window and somehow they lost control and rolled the car. I wanna say Phil Lafon had the worse injuries out of the group too.

Woah woah, now Sid just returned on this episode of raw and I am easily confused! I always thought he left after Mania 13, never to come back; literally never knew he was back again!

He definitely came back after Wrestlemania 13. Sid was in a 6 man tag match with LOD against Owen/Bulldog/Anvil at King of the Ring 1997. Sid ate the pin from Owen.
