"Zoe? Zoe?"
A voice from the distance calls out. Zoe pays no attention to the sound but rather to the sight of the beverage swirling around in her coffee mug.
"Zoe?"
She snaps out of her trance and gazes up to see a familiar face.
Blonde hair put up in a messy bun? How classy of her. Must have took all of ten seconds to do.
A smile grows upon Zoe's cold face. She springs out of the orange chair and waves with both hands high in the air at the familiar face.
"Come over here!"
It's been almost 6 months since I've last seen her. She appears just as glamorous as always.
Zoe grabs the girl and pulls her in tightly for a hug. She runs her hands up and down the girl's back as a tear drops from her face and onto the girl's grey cardigan.
"I missed you so damn much! Words can't even describe how glad I am to see you"
The girl pats Zoe's back gently. She can sense Zoe has been through some rather not-so-good moments lately as she hears Zoe sniffle.
"Something told me you were in need of a friend, Zoe"
Zoe releases her hold on Melissa and stares at her. Melissa uses her soft sleeve on her cardigan to wipe Zoe's smeared eyeliner from her soft cheeks.
"That best friend instinct, huh?"
Zoe giggles takes a seat back in her chair. Melissa joins her at the table and looks at the steam coming from Zoe's coffee mug.
"Zoe, what in the absolute **** is that green crap in your cup?"
Melissa makes a face that can only mean one thing, disgust. Zoe chuckles as she lifts the white mug and takes a sip of the hot tea.
"It's called Matcha. It's a green tea that is made in Japan. For hundreds of years it has been a part of Japanese culture. It is made from tea leaves that are grown in the shade. It also is--"
Melissa looks into Zoe's big bright brown eyes and sticks her tongue out. She grows bored of learning about the tea and interrupts her.
"Is this one of those kick your grandpa has you on?"
Zoe nods while glancing at the tea once again swirling in the mug. She quickly falls into a trance that gives away her inner emotions.
"What's wrong, Zoe? Wait, your grandpa didn't pass away did he!?"
Melissa bops her forehead with her hand thinking she struck a nerve in her best friend, Zoe.
"Gosh no! He moved back to Japan for the fall though. I finally had my first match in this new wrestling organization and he just leaves"
Zoe sighs and places her head on her hand as she recollects the last time she saw her grandfather.
"Saying goodbye to him was harder this time, Melissa. I couldn't control my emotions. He saw me cry..he hates seeing me cry!"
Melissa places her hand on Zoe's arm showing her compassion and support. Zoe looks down at Melissa's hand on her arm and shows a quick smile.
"You know, you cry a lot. You should work on that a bit, Zoe. You have to be a stronger woman. If you cry a lot and show it, people will feed on it. People always seek out a weakness"
A weakness..that's it! Last match with Jon Gotch, I went all out. Guns blazing and no strings attached. I didn't focus on his weaknesses.
"You're a genius, Melissa! You just gave me some advice, really good advice!"
Melissa scratches her head to show her confusion. Zoe laughs knowing that Melissa has no idea what she is even talking about.
If I can focus on my opponent's weaknesses, I should be able to get the win.
"What advice, Zoe? I'm pretty sure I just told you that you are over emotional"
I wouldn’t expect any less from Melissa. She always pointed out the obvious and is oblivious to the bigger picture. If I can focus on my opponent’s weakness, I will win my matches. I failed to do that very thing in my last match against Jon Gotch. Shame on me..
“Nevermind, Melissa. So listen, when are you flying back to Arizona?”
Melissa looks up and gets lost in her thoughts. Zoe leans in closer hoping to get a response.
“I think...October 25th? Wait..the 23rd. No! the 25th. Yeah, that’s it!”
Zoe shakes her head to indicate her disappointment in Melissa. Melissa smiles as she takes out her cell phone.
“Melissa, you are always so forgetful! You never remember things”
“That may be true, but didn’t you forget to focus on your opponent’s weakness?”
Zoe’s eyes light up like a christmas tree as she is in complete shock. She didn’t think Melissa would understand the whole weakness ordeal. Melissa blinks her eyes quickly and puts on an innocent smile.
“Yeah, I know what advice I gave you earlier. How you might ask? Well, you talk out loud..a lot!”
Damn, she’s right. I do always talk loud. I never understood why..it just happens. My opponent this week is the new National Champion, Lucas Crowe.
“Hey, I got to go and train for my upcoming match. If you are in town still, I can hook you up with some tickets and maybe you can come watch the show?”
“Sounds good to me, girl! I’ll call you tonight and let you know what’s going on”
Zoe rises from her seat as does Melissa. Melissa hugs Zoe, but this time it’s a different hug than the last. Instead of tears falling from Zoe’s face, a smile grows on her face. Melissa grins and says goodbye to Zoe.
“I hope to see you soon, Mel. I really do..”
Zoe pulls her car keys out from the left pocket of her hoodie and hurries out of the building.
At Borderlines, I won’t make the same mistakes I made last match.
Zoe opens the door to her glossy red cadillac and hops in.
Lucas Crowe is quite the competitor. I admire his passion for wrestling. He won a belt that will eventually become mine, they all will. Lucas thinks he is the hottest thing going on in the company because of his win last week? That’s all fine and dandy, but come Borderline...I’ll prove him wrong. I lost last week and I’m not proud of that. To be quite frank, I’m utterly disgusted in myself. This is my chance to make a name for myself. You better believe that I will defeat Lucas Crowe. I will take everything my baba taught me and win. After Borderlines is all said and done, Lucas Crowe and the whole world will know that ME, Zoe Schaefer, is the hottest thing in the company today.
