I've seen some people say all the way back in 2008, but I've only started to notice in the last few years. Now if you watch on an old 4:3 tv like the one I use for my vintage gaming, some things are cropped out and don't display in full.
Any info on this?
Another small pet peeve, their dvds always jump to pan and scan on 4:3 tv's.

They went widescreen when they switched their TV over to HD in January 2008

I'm guessing the reason why you didn't notice for a while was that they were probably still framing the camera work for 4:3 TVs back then, but now they don't seem to care about doing that because I guess they figure most everyone has HDTVs by now.

In January 2008 they went widescreen.
However, the Royal Rumble 2008 DVD that I had, didn't go widescreen for some reason. It was in full frame. So I am not entirely sure when the DVDs started to come out in widescreen.
As for your TV situation, if you didn't have an HD receiver then you probably would get Raw and Smackdown in the 4:3 full frame. Unless the TV station would show the widescreen episode for ya in the full frame box.

If you just have normal cable then you will watch Raw widescreen, but if your cable provides HD then you can watch Raw full screen, so it won't look like a movie when you're watching Raw.

I do find this odd, a lot of things did adopt 16:9 way before WWE did. They were super late to the party.

They went HD and Widescreen in like the second week of 2008.
I remember reading before they were trying to go HD as early as 2003 apparently. I want to say it had something to do with that guy who owns HDNet but plans fell through. (Not 100% sure).
It was probably best to wait til' they did though because HD didn't really take off until the later 2000's.

I want to say that Wrestlemania 19. 20 and 21 was all filmed in widescreen too, but we got presented in full screen on DVD and PPV. On the last Edge DVD for his documentary, when talking about Wrestlemania 21, the MITB ladder match takes up the entire screen. Where as it would have had black bars on the side if it was just filmed in the 4:3 ratio. And I wanna say the Wrestlemania 19 documentary that came with the WM 20 DVD was in widescreen format too, thus proving that WM 19 was filmed widescreen as well.

It wasn't the whole show that was recorded with the Widescreen HD cameras I don't think though, just certain action shots for the Mania of Mania Doc, and probably commercials as you still see WM XIX-21 and 23 in HD during WM Commercials.

Whole different crew and equipment (I'm half-certain it was shot on 35mm film). At WrestleMania 19, the commentators talked about the documentary crew being there because the plan at the time was for the documentary to get an actual theatrical release or something. That's why it was shot in widescreen. The first WrestleMania event that was shot in widescreen was WrestleMania 24.

This is really interesting to me. Does anyone know if the early Mania's were shot on Film? Was any WWF/WWE programming shot on film? It's an incredibly expensive process and would've required tons of work, but seeing an original WrestleMania in true 1080p quality (maybe even 4K!) would be insane.

Yeah, it was January of '08. Often times, they will zoom and crop older footage to fill the screen. So, if anyone recalls seeing something from prior to January of '08 in full frame 16:9, it's likely just a zoom.
I remember before the Network launched, they asked the Fan Council how they wanted SD content to be seen on the Network. Thankfully, the original aspect ratio won out.

No WrestleManias were shot on film. Some WrestleManias (19 for sure, maybe others) have had film cameras there shooting bits for other things, but no WWE event has ever been recorded for broadcast on film. From 1985-2007, they were shot on SD video. Since 2008, they've been shot in HD video.
