Ok so I wanted to talk a little about this time frame, from the night after Mania X7 till probably the night when WCW and ECW invaded; honestly why is this time so overlooked?
I mean personally its one of my favourite periods of time watching ever; you had so many big things happen during that time its crazy to look back on and think.
-You had the Austin heel turn, and subsequent teaming with Triple H and McMahon
-Rock left for his first real long absence to Hollywood
-We saw Undertaker become relevant again
-The DDP angle, which sure the end maybe wasn't the best, but the build up was superb, no one can deny that
-Booker T showed up and started the whole Invasion angle, which again like the DDP stuff was amazing
-Benoit and Angle had a few months of incredible matches
-That lead to the Angle and Shane brawl at KOTR and the rise of both Benoit and Jericho
-The whole WCW thing was going, but underlying, you knew something was going to happen, it was all a case of when!
-Triple H got injured which no doubt messed up plans for run up to and the actual execution of the Invasion angle
-Same with Benoit, though he was supposed to be a BIG player in the Invasion angle I've heard
All of this in what, the space of what, 3 and a half, maybe 4 months tops - has there ever been a time when so much happened, so many big things happened in such a short amount of time?
To add to it all, the PPVs (Mania, Backlash, Judgement Day, King Of The Ring) were all phenomenal, packed to the brim with just amazing matches, none of them really dissapointed at all.
So yeah, does anyone else love this time?

Oh yeah, it was a great time!
Being a huge fan of Chris Benoit then, the matches he was having with Angle on PPV, the UK PPV, and Raw were amazing. From 30 minute iron man matches, to 2/3 falls matches, to ladder matches, to the cage match on Raw, everything those 2 did in 2001 was great.
The Tag Division was on fire then too, with so many teams competing with each other. It was a great time to be a wrestling fan, no doubt. It's a shame the current product can't have that kind of fire too, and there's no excuse why it shouldn't. The talent is there, just the creative booking is not.

Heel Austin is so underrated. He had been the same character from late 1997 so the heel turn was something different.
Also in 2001 Raw was completely unmissable. |

DDP getting legitimately buried into oblivion is not something I remember fondly.
I don't use the term buried often as I feel the meaning has been lost, but...yeah.
He shouldn't have been WWE Champion. However, with his popularity and skill, he should have had killer IC Championship matches. Period.

Oh I agree, but I mean more in terms of when he was initially brought in, like he was strong up until maybe SummerSlam and the stuff with Sara got ridiculous! But I agree with Austin's heel run being criminally underrated; I've always loved the psychology behind it, and Im sure I've talked about it on here before - you had this guy come back from a near career-ending injury and if we're honest didn't really have the strongest first 6 months back in terms of wins/loses and kayfabe. So he enlists the most powerful man in the WWE to help him win and hold onto the title, this is all very very evident when we get to KOTR and Austin is desperate for McMahon, he NEEDS him, and doesn't believe in himself to win the ME. Its that aspect I feel many just dont get or care to think about, that extra layer really makes this time so enjoyable for me. But on the subject, has it ever been said about what role Hunter would have had in the Invasion? Original plans that had Benoit and Jericho - I once read this super weird one that said it was gonna be Taker and Triple H being the main guys for WWE and Austin and I wanna say Benoit or maybe Rock being the top dogs on the Alliance side....which is weird to say the least! |

Never a fan of DDP. I liked him more as a manager with Hall as the Diamond Studd.

DDP and the Rock in a battle of who the real People's Champion was something I always wanted. Obviously Rock would go over but still, it was better than miscasting him. Also, Undertaker was in absolute NO SELL mode during this era and it is one of the main reasons I hate the ABA era. |

It could have been a lot better with the presence of 5 more guys that were the big part of WCW, like Sting, nWo (Nash, Hogan and Hall) and Goldberg.
With those guys things would have been a lot different.

All the guys who would've rather sit at home and collect their check, and here you have a legitimate WCW star in DDP. Great character, charisma and the Diamond Cutter!? Say no more. The WWE missed the ball with him by a million miles. Should've been huge. |

Since I despised Austin's heel turn I am not a fan of this period. Also his heel turn wasnt underrated-it totally blew & is a permanent stain on his career.
It was ok that he was the same guy since 1997-nobody wanted him to turn heel or to boo him.
I will say this though.....the midcard was greatness and it was exciting seeing DDP & Booker turn up etc etc. Pity about what would follow.

The moments WCW shut its doors, Wrestling just wasnt fun for me any more. There was nothing WWF could have done to make me super excited.

Jericho, Benoit and Angle were my highlights during this time. I mean, even going back and watching the PPVs from the era (Backlash, Judgment Day, Insurrextion and KOTR), something just feels off.

the complete 180 on Austins character was a huge mistake for Vince. People tuned out in droves here.....My cousins have told me it was the same stateside.
The 2 Man Power Trip should have been UT & HHH......made WAY more sense than Austin & HHH.

Late 2000-Early 2001 is one of my favorite stretches in WWE. From Summerslam 2000 to King of the Ring 2001 every PPV delivered in my opinion.

2001, particularly the first six months, is my favorite time period ever.
I've said it before, and I believe it to be absolutely true - May 2001 (the night after Judgment Day) through King of the Ring 2001 is the greatest month of WWE programming of all time. Every single Raw and Smackdown was huge.

I really didn't enjoy 2001 after Wrestlemania X-7, but the first few months leading up to Mania were fantastic. I could just never get into Austin as a heel aligning with Vince. Everything Austin did just seemed so unnatural and forced for no reason other than to try and get him over as a heel. Now, the matches themselves that he, along with Triple H, had with Taker/Kane, the Hardyz, Benoit/Jericho, etc. were all very good, but from a storyline standpoint it was just hard for me to enjoy that time period.
