I thought of this fun idea for a thread. What are some of your favorite movies that should have been nominated or won an Oscar? It doesn't matter if it's best picture or actor or costumes. My choices would be Days of Thunder (1990) Best Original Score- Hans Zimmer. This score is one of the most amazing early 90s synth scores that isn't cheesy or cheap. It feature Jeff Beck on lead guitars. Days of Thunder Best costume design. The costumes in this movie stand out a lot since they really nailed the firesuits and pit crew uniforms including the trucker hats. One Hour Photo (2002) Best Actor- Robin Williams This film was never nominated for an Oscar. Robin Williams gave an performance like you never seen him do before, play a creep and he played it well.

Scorsese should have got the gold for Goodfellas, not for The Departed. Also, Forrest Gump robbed Pulp Fiction of its Oscar. Tarantino made the defining film of the decade and somehow doesn't win. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring should have beat out A Beautiful Mind. Also, Rocky over Taxi Driver, Network, and All the President's Men? 2001 not even nominated (although it was reviled by many critics at the time).

The fact that Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption is preposterous and still makes me angry. In fact, I have never held the Oscars in as much esteem since.

People usually bring up how The Dark Knight wasn't nominated in '08 but In Bruges is the one that crushes everything that year.

Water For Elephants should have been nominated for Best Score. It's one of James Newton Howard's best scores. The Social Network should have won Best Picture and Best Actor. Fincher got robbed big time there. I'm still baffled how Stallone never won for best screenplay. Man of Steel should have gotten a nomination for Best Score as well. I'm really annoyed at Alan Menken for having 8 Oscars for mediocre scores and songs from Disney movies. How in the hell does he have 8 but John Williams has 5? I'm thinking Disney rigged the academy awards for Menken. Who Killed The Electric Car? Never even got a nomination for Best Documentary. Gravity shouldn't have gotten all the awards that it got especially for Best Score. Skyfall should have won Best Score that year. It seems like Disney always wins the Best Animated movie category which is unfair to other worthy contenders. Batman Mask of The Phantasm should have been nominated for Best Animated Feature, it wasn't a Disney film. Bruce Timm is a great guy and really deserves an Academy Award. Escape From Alcatraz should have been nominated for Best score. Jerry Fielding did an amazing job creating a creepy soundtrack that was recorded with a normal orchestra but then distorted post recording

I liked Pulp Fiction but Forrest is a much better film. I would go as far as saying not 1 cast member of Pulp Fiction has the acting skills of Tom Hanks.

It seems to me that movies that win academy awards usually suck really bad.... the Artist anyone? I usually try to watch all of the movies that are nominated for the awards and 9 times out of ten I will dislike the nominated movies. They usually seem very boring to me and I struggle to see who those movies would appeal to.

There are several Pixar movies that should have been nominated for if not won best picture but they got disrespected because they are "computer animated cartoons for kids".
Sean Astin deserved a best supporting actor nomination for LotR: Return of the King. He carried the Frodo/Samwise/Gollum half of the movie and made the Samwise character my favorite from the series.

The Dark Knight Toy Story Seven Empire Strikes Back Malcolm X Back to the Future Aliens The Matrix
To name a few... I mean the Oscars have always been more about making a statement more so than anything else. Mostly about how pretentious watching a movie can truly be. It's nice to see talented people win but we live in a world where Leonardo DiCaprio is still waiting on his best actor win but Adrien Brody and Jamie Foxx are all set. I feel the Oscars insult more people than they commend, including the audiences intelligence.

Goodfellas losing both best director and best picture to Dances with Wolves is crazy. However, Scorcese and Raging Bull losing to Ordinary People is even worse.
Not that he needs more awards, but DDL should've won for Gangs of New York.

They usually seem very boring to me and I struggle to see who those movies would appeal to. I actually enjoy "The Artist," but I like old style cinema & it felt refreshing...everyone likes different stuff though I don't put much stock in the Oscars honestly. 1. Sandra Bullock won for The Blindside & the film was even nominated for best movie (after school special garbage, little kid deserved a Razzie, Bullock wasn't anything special) 2. Titanic is a garbage film IMO & won best picture, Winslet was nominated & felt she was terrible in it 3. Melissa McCarthy nominated for Bridesmaids?? Her performance was just a rehash of Galifinaikis from The Hangover - gross out shockfest that isn't humorous (IMO) I think Hoffman deserved to win for Midnight Cowboy (arguably his best performance) over John Wayne Jamie Foxx's win for Ray is laughable to me (impersonations don't equal quality acting) Leo deserved to win for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" over Tommy Lee Jones in "The Fugitive" for supporting Poor Leo, he's been snubbed so many times now. As for the Artist, that movie just proved that the awards are a joke. Look at the Automotive industry, wouldnt it be a slap in the face to take a 1930's car and put it side by side with a 2000 car? The new car would have better brakes, seat belts, much better gas mileage, and so on. It would be a total joke to claim the 1930's car was a better machine. The same applies to any industry really, modern advances and techniques make things better today. So when a movie reverts to technology and techniques that were popular almost a century ago wins best picture it's just insane.

That movie was smutty schlock. The Blindside was one of the worst things I saw on Cable TV. Thankfully I didn't see it in the theater. I would have asked for my money back

The Molly Maguires should have won for best Art Direction. If it wasn't for Tambi Larson and Darrell Silvera, the town of Eckley Pennsylvania, where the movie was filmed would have been torn down and never turned into a museum. I live near the town and it hurts me when something like this gets robbed big time
