Foxcatcher should have been nominated for Best Picture. I don't think I've disliked a movie as much as I disliked Foxcatcher (maybe Boyhood). I heard so many great things about it. But it ran 40 minutes longer than it should have. Time and pacing for movies is a killer for me. If it can't hold my attention when trying to go long, screw it. Nightcrawler got a lot less nominations than I thought it should have. Gyllenhaal was amazing in it. It was shot really, really well. I still listen to James Newtown Howard's score. I've come to understand the Oscars less and less. That or I just don't care for movies that are just major funded jerk sessions.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and David Fincher seemed to be shutout of the Oscars for Some reason Shame. David Fincher should be an Oscar winner. He has an incredible filmography. The Game was one of his best films

Foxcatcher's slow simmering approach was necessary to fill the characters with pent-up emotion and create turmoil. The payoff would most likely have been ineffective with a faster pace or shorter runtime. I agree with you about Nightcrawler. I saw it in theaters and own it on Blu-ray. It was one of my favorite films of 2014, and I actually planned on including it in my next list of mistakes.

I've always been surprised Harry Potter never got a Best Picture nod. I mean, in terms of fantasy it's no Lord of the Rings, but in terms of success, there aren't a ton of franchises that surpass it that haven't been around for a few decades already. Weird.

Liam Neeson should have won Best Actor for Schindler's List over Tom Hanks for Philadelphia
Apollo 13 should have won Best Picture over Braveheart
Leonardo DiCaprio should have been nominated for and won Best Actor for Titanic
Kate Winslet should have won Best Actress for Titanic

It seems to me that movies that win academy awards usually suck really bad.... the Artist anyone? I usually try to watch all of the movies that are nominated for the awards and 9 times out of ten I will dislike the nominated movies. They usually seem very boring to me and I struggle to see who those movies would appeal to. The majority of them appeal to me. Aside from Hurt Locker and 12 Years a Slave, which were topical, exploitation bullcrap and should never have been recognized. But movies like There Will Be Blood, The Artist, Birdman, Argo, Beautiful Mind, No Country, all were well deserving of their awards. Forrest Gump, to me, is the most perfect film ever made. I mean I can see how these would be "boring" to some, but I, and millions of others definitely get a lot out of them. As far as movies that should've gotten more notoriety: The Town: Renner definitely deserved supporting actor. Up in the Air Citizen Kane Shawshank (Though Gump deserved it) Usual Suspects Interstellar Inception The Prestige And of course, Leo. Several times over. Basketball Diaries, Shutter Island, Inception, Gilbert Grape, Titanic, Departed, Revenant, WoW, Gangs of New York, Django...I mean come the on.

I'm not in the "why doesn't Leo have an Oscar?" boat because frankly I never felt he had the best performance in any given year compared to who he was up against, but he's a great actor who probably has the best resume of any actor in the past like fifteen years so I get it ... but Gangs of New York? He's not even the best performance in that movie, and he'd be up against guys like Nic Cage for Adaptation and Michael Caine for The Quiet American.

Not saying he should've won for GoNY, just listing his ridiculous resume. You'd think someone that's been in these films would've won something lol. But eh, I think The Departed was his best chance, aside from this year.

There's been too many over the years. The fact that November-forward is typically known as the time of year where Hollywood releases all their Oscar-bait films (films which are typically a bore and designed solely for Oscar nominations) says everything that needs to be known about the Oscars. Just about everything that wins is a slog period-piece or biopic about musician or revered intellectual. Or a film that relies heavily on some gimmick
