I just started collecting again less than a month ago. It seems like I've been pretty obsessive with getting my collection started again from the ground up. Granted, it will naturally slow down soon here since I've invested so much into so many different wrestling figures. But how much is too much? When is it going overboard?
I'm an adult collector, and I do have a good amount of savings in the bank, and a credit card with a fair limit (good credit at that). My future is fairly secure at this point and I only worry about saving up more money just in case I need it in the future. I don't make a whole lot, but I don't have many expenses to pay either.
In the last month I have spent around CAD $2600.00 on wrestling figures. I do feel like I'm budgeting this nicely since I haven't needed to dig into savings at all, but I'm still worried I'm going overboard. I just feel like I want to have a great collection. For one reason or another, I've never been at a point before where I could, or was willing to, spend so much money on, and quickly collect, a huge array of wrestling figures. This, and Mattel, is really my dream come true. So I'm not sure how to balance it.
I was planning on getting a new desktop computer in the New Year, which I don't really need. Looks like that money has instead gone to wrestling figures, so it isn't much of a loss perhaps. I also find that this wrestling figure hobby keeps me sober. I've recently quit drugs, smoking, and have barely been drinking any alcohol. I guess this is a bit of a reward for me.
I know I don't need anyone's permission to spend, and even if I were to receive everyone's "blessing", I still will be slowing down within another month or so. Eventually there would be nothing more to collect. I only collect Elites, and I'm not interested in owning every single one. But how much is too much? Am I going crazy with spending?
What would be your own personal limit? And what amount of money would you need to have saved to spend "X" amount of money on wrestling figures? I'd like to have everyone who replies here do some math at an imaginary fortune. A "What if...". For me, with my expenses, I could easily spend $1000 every month on wrestling figures if I were making at least $3000. But in real life I don't make that much, I've just saved extremely well.
Hope this can be an interesting dialogue...

Do what you love. If you got the money, then the sky's the limit

Congrats on being sober. I say just do what makes you happy. My spending on figures has slowed drastically because I'm going to Mania, but the most i've spent in a month on figures was probably $400. It's always more expensive when you start collecting late.

Your Profile Picture and Signature are 2spooky4me. As for your question, i'm a student atm so for me the limit is above 80 bucks for one figure. And it has to be mint in box for it to be worth it. 2600 is crazy to think about.

I usually don't spend more than $50-100 a month on figures, but when my entertainment/collecting money is that or a little higher a month, and I collect other things, I can't do more. Trust me, if my income increases later in the year like I'm hoping, I'll be spending a lot more.

Unless it's a rare rare case, I get every elite in a lineup. Only the basics and battlepacks I want, and almost all of the exclusives. So add that all up.

Im starting a killer new job in a couple weeks with tons of great benefits. I expect my spending to fluctuate upwards for the year before crashing back down. I really need to go back and pick up the Savage figures I missed and some other stuff (check my: L's haves wants classified thread). I'm at the point now where I realize I have lots of crap I don't need or necessarily really want but got it because it was there. I snag both basics if I really like them and elites with elites being my primary targets. I'm really more into collecting a few specific wrestlers as opposed to having a huge roster.

Ever since I caught up on my flashbacks and got most of who I wanted, in regards to new releases, I preorder only who I really want or are unlikely to find in stores. My selection usually sucks over here, so ordering online's my only true option, and sometimes temptation can have its way with you with regards to online browsing.
I still have gaps in my collection (Debut Kane and Diesel, to name a couple) but they're pricey for my taste as it stands. Maybe if I had tons more disposable income I'd bite the bullet on them, but I digress.
You set your own limit. Pick and choose who you really need and who you don't. I don't have to pick up every Bret Hart as the WM 30 Heritage works fine for me, even though the DM and RSC are fine figures, just like I don't have to pick up every Warrior, as the HoF and Legends 4 suit me.
Also choose whether you're an Elite or Basic collector. Elites cost more, but I feel they're a better investment if you're not hot on the current scene like me. The only real ballbusters are exclusives (Hall of Fame, RSC, etc.) but they're more often than not worth it in the end, especially RSC.
TL;DR If you have decent budgeting skills and aren't in a mad dash to collect everybody, you can set your own goals.

I have collected nonstop since the Hasbro days. I used to be a completist but since they're getting more expensive, I only now buy just the figures I want.

As long as you can afford it, and the family NEVER goes without, do it. I don't buy vast numbers of figures, but when I saw that 1 of 15 2K14 Exclusive Warrior figure I knew I was getting it, and the four figure sum I paid for it was worth EVERY penny. I enjoy it, I love my collection and it's also an investment of sorts, or a savings plan at the very least. No figure I oWn is worth less now than when I bought it. My family never goes without so why not! Enjoy it

My limit is whatever I'm willing to pay for it. If I look at it and think, "That's too much", then I've reached my limit.

I do not have a limit, or a cap of any kind. As long as the kids get what they need, responsibilities are met etc, whatever is left over is all mine. One of the few perks of being single again. Lol....In your case, from what i read, you have 3 big things going for you in relation to collecting. You're financially in a position to do it.......its helping you to stay healthy (congrats by the way)......and you took the time to stop and question yourvspending habits. The first two things are great in and of themselves, but the fact that your thinking about your spending habits, shows that yyou're keeping the hobby in its proper perspective. Plus, as you noted, your purchases will slow gradually as you get caught up. So relax, enjoy the fun, treat yourself for successfully overcoming your own obstacles, and start posting pics of your collection for us!

I hunt in short spurts
I'll go two weeks without searching (unless I come across something that I absolutely have to have).
And then the next two weeks are an all out war that I spare no expense. Especially when it comes to Batman, Marvel, comic books, and wrestling figures.

I use to collect one of ever guy, RA,DA,impact, basic, deluxe and Elite was the cap if 123kid was made into Elite then I would sell off my cs version. However due to life changing goals I have instead kept some basics and boxed them away and paid my buddy to put more FIGURES if I purchase them away as well while I'm gone for 8 years or so. So only basics now a days

I haven't bout a figure since last October. I usually spend at most $100 on figures when I have the money.

I have strict limits. Sometimes I break. Today, for instance, I broke and bought a Battle Packs 38 Wyatt-Undertaker pack. I used to have a problem buying basics strictly for parts (heads, arms). It's a slippery slope and soon I have money spent with nothing to show for it but 1 or 2 fix-ups in the end.
In Canada, on a small island, in a smaller city, I have to wait seemingly eons for new stock of any kind WWE related. Ordering online isn't a viable avenue as the Canadian dollar is so low right now, its costing over double the retail cost of anything I want. This is made especially frustrating because there's plenty of recent/new stock I want that I should have access to at the retail level.
I have to say I won't spend over $60 on any single figure, so that ceiling cost is consistently met if I ever go online, it also immediately rules out Amazon.ca, the biggest joke ever.
I'm left to suffer through the agony of hoping people will buy the literal stacks of Sycho Sids and Godfathers and E38 Bryans until I can hope to get E40 at all. But alas, I like my figures, so in the end...whatever?
