Can anyone shed some light on how Target's toy inventory is managed?
Is each individual Target responsible for ordering its own stock? Or, is a certain amount of stock sent out to a region, and that stock is divided up among the stores in that area, based on how low their inventory is?
I ask because I was able to find the Heenan family at one store out of about ten in my area. None of the others have gotten it yet, and they still haven't received any HOF 3. Curious how they received the Heenan family when no other Targets in the area have.
But then when HOF 2 hit last year, all the stores seem to get it at once. Which seems like it was because that entire region got sent stock at the same time. I have yet to see HOF 3 at any stores in my area.

the answer is both. some items are distro'ed from the warehouse and other items are sent based on several things at each store level.
At store level items are ordered based on shelf capacity and cycle counts (inventory). If the counts are being done and checked at store level and shelf capacities are set right then the replenishment rate of an item should come in or back in stock as long as the warehouse has the items to send.
for my local target to get in HOF series 3 I had the clerk set the inventory to zero (we had 6) so that it would order a new case. It worked, otherwise he told me that they probably would not get a new case until the others had sold.

On hand level of product. when it is sold down enough the warehouse sends them replenishment. So the one store you were at had sold enough horsemen packs to get sent the Heenan pack.

Once their inventory reaches a certain amount the distribution center will send more product.

My two stores had 17 and 19 four horsemen sets last week so I figured they would never get the Heenan family. Then this week both stores got another case each so I went to check.....more horsemen So dumb....every store in my state just about has double digit horsemen sets. Hof3 still hasn't hit my state either. Most stores stock levels are in single digits, a couple of stores at zero, one store has over 50 (but that number is down from like 130 a couple months ago). Very little increases in those numbers except a couple stores got new cases of hof1 and 2 but they still seem to sell. I need these new sets to hit soon...............cmon target

The way these Horsemen sets are sitting worries me for the future of these 4-packs. I really want the Heenan family but the 8 Targets around me all have 10+ Horsemen.

this will be pain in the ass, but if you want to improve the chances of getting the heenan pack(or any line) to hit near you, you'll have to:
1. buy all the horsemen packs from the target you hit most frequently. 2. return them to a target you hit most INfrequently. 3. wait for your target to replenish stock(using the target inventory checker site) and PRAY that's it's the heenan pack. if it isn't, repeat this process.
i have done this countless times with marvel legends, star wars and elites and, inevitably, i get what i'm looking for. yes, there have been times they restock with older waves. but as far as i know, there is no way to change that.

It would cost me hundreds at one store alone to buy out their stock. The time and effort to do this is not worth the extra $25 the set will cost me on eBay.

Once their inventory reaches a certain amount the distribution center will send more product. As for my Target they have been sitting on 3 HOF2 figures for quite some time now. I'm sure the number is less than 3 on that. I had an interesting trip though. The Target tracker said Target had 4/4 (quantity/sell-able) of DM figures. I race, thinking it's STONE COLD! However nothing on the peg. The employee scans the tag, it says none is in the stock room, but shows they have 4 on hand. She is puzzled, I am puzzled. She did not give any information. Do you have any info that can help?

The way these Horsemen sets are sitting worries me for the future of these 4-packs. I really want the Heenan family but the 8 Targets around me all have 10+ Horsemen. I know it's not a Mattel issue, but I wonder if they anticipated any of this. They number of Horsemen sitting around my area is crazy. Mattel has to know that some of these lines are failure when they produce them; Slam city, power slammer, flex force, and rumblers (although I liked rumblers). Bill said it depended on the numbers, but these two sets are tailored to the collector market. Even being toys for kids, someone from Mattel should have known that the four-packs would be doomed base on character selection. I know, the fault lies on the retailer... Target most have gotten a slam dunk kind of deal they could not pass up. Regardless, their decisions are not made with any kind of depth or knowledge for the product. The best way to manage these would been to marketed them as a holiday toy and sold until a month after Xmas, then clearance out for the next holiday. In any every, Bill can say "We tried!"

Phantom or misplaced case. The Target my friend works at has had a missing case of Basics for at least 4 months. He said they even did an adjustment and it still shows a phantom case.

Source: I worked at Target for two years.
I'll just talk about toys since that's what is relevant to the discussion. Food, pharmacy, chemicals are different. For toys, their in-stock team goes through once (for low volume stores) or twice (high volume) a week and scan all the empty or low pegs (1 or 2). If they are in stock in the back, that will trigger them to be brought out to the floor. If they don't have any in the back, it orders them from the distribution center. A high volume store would get toys 2-3 times a week and low volume once a week or so. This goes out the window in December when they get toy trucks nearly every night.
So, if you are ever at your target and the elites are all on the HOF pegs and you're waiting for them to get them (or vice versa) then put them back in the right spot and you'll have them in a few days.
