I'm coming up to 17 years of age which means I can get my provisional license here in Ireland after you do your theory test, I'm familiar with how a car works and I know the rules of the road well, but I'm also quite nervous about driving on a public road, did anyone else have this fear? Is there any way to stop thinking about it as much? I know you eventually grow out of it but doing it for the first time will be a shocker for me as I've always been afraid of car accidents and endangering other people, even being in other people's cars and I'm not the one behind the wheel.

Just remember.....use your brakes. Brakes are what makes driving possible. Once you get moving,...be prepared to use brakes, gently Once you master your footwork, then you will be more confident

I'm in Ireland too and I'm learning right now and I pretty much had the same concern. My advice is to just get out and drive as much as you can, whether it be with your instructor or your parents and that fear should phase out itself as you become more confident on the road.

Like Stuart? said, experience is key! Get out as much as possible! I went out all the time with my parents/grandparents and it helped my confidence so much! Also, if something goes wrong don't stress, it happens, just recover and move on and learn from it! If you get angry/scared you'll just keep making more mistakes and keep getting angrier/more scared!

I wasn't nervous learning but when it came to the test that's when my nerves kicked in. I wanted to drive and own a car more than anything when I was 17. Finally got to when I turned 18 and it got old fast. I really hate driving now, too many bungholes on the road.

The nervousness will go away once you get used to it. Having your liscense is fun until people start asking you for crap and you have to do it for things you don't want to lol

I love driving, I passed my test on my first try too. I can't imagine lifeel without a drivers license anymore, as somebody else said above, it's freedom.

It's honestly way easier than you think.
Just watch out and stay alert, the smallest mistake would always get my confidence and basically ruin lessons for me.

I practiced driving for weeks before taking the test. By the time I took the test, I already felt comfortable driving.

Just drive around your neighborhood every day. Get used to maneuvering around. Driving is a lot of nuance and just knowing the feel of your particular car. So practice makes perfect. Drive around in low pressure spots. Then as you feel more confident slowly expand your driving area.
Also, my brother just got his license. He was good enough to pass but he's still nervous. Driving with him recently, I realized what they teach you in the books is kind of counter-intuitive. For example, we were approaching one of those intersections where the left lane gets an arrow specifically for that lane to turn. I tell my brother "Just stop the car and wait for the arrow." He keeps driving up into the middle of the intersection waiting for a chance to go. Not surprisingly the light turns and were sitting in the intersection like a couple of idiots. I asked my brother why he kept going when I told him to stop. He said "Everything I've read says to wait in the middle of the intersection for your chance to go."

NEVER lose the fear of the road. If you stop fearing the road you get too comfortable, if you get too comfortable you take things for granted, when you take things for granted accidents happen. Always respect the road and your vehicle and always be very wary of all other people/vehicles/animals on that road.
If a vehicle in front of you is showing you brake lights you make sure you step on your brake as well.
Always take into consideration the environment. If it's raining outside the road is slick, drive accordingly, same goes for ice. Another thing about rain is if you see a puddle of water avoid the puddle, there might be a big pot hole or sink hole in that puddle that you cant see. Those can and will damage your vehicle and possibly cause you to lose control.
Good luck!

Thanks for replying lads, made me feel a lot more normal for feeling nervous, as some people just seem to get it immediately and I may not be like that.

They won't teach it this specifically in the books, but you are supposed to wait in the middle of the intersection for your chance to turn left. You must not be too far out that you cannot see the set of lights in the intersection you are at. While waiting for your chance to turn the light may change to yellow and then red. It is your right of way to evacuate the intersection at that time. Do not take too long.
