The commentary is one of the the worst parts of the product, and has been for a long time. It's second only to the booking in terms of insulting the audience and devaluing the in ring work. Mauro has been awesome and he's obviously trying to do it right, and somehow they seem to be letting him, so there is hope.

I wonder when Mauro decided to quit the Tonight Show in order to sign with WWE?...
...I'm kidding. Though I can't help but be reminded of Steve Higgins when I see him on SmackDown.

My buddy and I talked about that last year. There is no story telling. No captivating commentary, and I think that hurts the overall product.

That and JBL plays the heel commentator for everyone and everything EXCEPT Cena. When Cena comes out....he kisses Cena's ass and talks about how tough he is and goes crazy when he gets screwed. So he's like how heel Cole was?

Absolutely true.
It's why I mute it for the most part...but when I need to hear what's going on, I'm just gobsmacked by the overuse of:
'WE'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE!'
'YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!'
'WHAT'S HE THINKING HERE?'
...and so on, and so on.

JBL is NOT a heel. He supports the guys he likes no matter if they are heel or face.
Cesaro Cena Owens Gallows and Anderson Luke Harper
He goes nuts for those guys all the time.
He craps on heels like The Acension, Styles, etc.
There is no rhyme or reason with JBL, he simply supports who he likes at the time.
I don't know why everyone thinks he's a heel and supports only heels....

So he's like how heel Cole was? Yup. And heel Cole was a failure on commentary. I found him somewhat entertaining as a performer....but not as a lead commentator. I need my play by play guy to narrate the story....not plug social media, call the highlightsetc.

I need my play by play guy to narrate the story....not plug social media, call the highlightsetc. Completely agree. The lead announcer really dictates the show in some ways. For instance, Joey Styles in ECW. Awesome. Good 'ol JR in WWE. Awesome. WCW meh but passable compared to now. Vin Scully in all sports when announcing. Awesome. The announcer can help out the show tremendously and I have been saying for years that Michael Cole has been killing wrestling with his commentary. Could you imagine JR still announcing and telling stories and insights. It would be much more enjoyable.

The greatest play by play ever heard, even over the great Gordon Solie, was JR in the late 80s to early 90s. And Solie NEVER lost his skill. JR came to WWE went into Boomer Sooner mode before ultimately being struck down with Bells Palsy, became bitter at the world and WWE and eventually lost his mind.

The commentary right now in the WWE is the worst it has ever been. Mistake prone, absolutely zero calling of moves, or the match itself. It's just awful noise.

Maybe Vince is having the commentators not call action.

JBL has been pretty good so far, I don't see how bad he is; not to mention he plays the voice of reason

I've been going back and watching all the Raw and Nitros on the Network and I'm up to where Cole was first brought to commentary. It seems like it's just he himself that chooses to be such a huge recap person because just like others have said, he will immediately repeat what someone JUST said seconds ago and is so quick to give us a history lesson for every single little thing. But when JR was brought back (the night The Rock through the smoking skull belt into the river), he doesn't do much educating, he just reacts to stuff in a genuine way. And I think that's Cole's big problem. He doesn't seem like an actual wrestling fan because he's never display any true genuine emotion in all of his years with WWE, it's always so fabricated. The best example is when The Rock and Cena were dissing each other a few years ago and you heard him laughing on commentary during it. It wasn't authentic at all, he was forcing himself to find what they were saying funny I guess to make sure we accepted it as funny. I could accept him as a backstage announcer then, and maybe even now. He worked perfectly against The Rock in 99, and still could do stuff like that today. But I have never enjoyed his commentary. I could accept Saxton and JBL, I would even accept Jerry Lawler TRYING to be the heel commentator, but I can never accept Cole. I remember when Tom Phillips was doing SmackDown for a while, he really tried to call the action, but I guess they didn't like that and moved him back to NXT once they got rid of Michael Cole 2.0: Rich Brennan, which is fine because that made the NXT commentary team much better, too.
