Just getting around to watching Raw and noticed the first match began 24 minutes into the Raw. 24 minutes is longer than the run time of a half hour TV program (like Modern Family, etc.). Is it just me or is this unreasonable/unacceptable? I feel like the opening promos are getting longer and longer and isn't doing anything of value.

That's nuts. And lazy, imo.

I missed raw the first hour or so of raw but by the time they open the show do their promo, go to commercial its around that. Did a promo about Reigns being suspended open the show? Could be why also.

I'd rather have long promos than long matches on RAW. Long matches should be saved for PPV's and if it happens on RAW it makes it happening on PPV's less special. In addition, if there is no reason to fight then why the should I care about a long match? What happens on RAW should be what makes you care about the long matches on the PPV's

nash says it himself in a recent shoot interview. there is nothing staler than having that same opening shot of your show with a few guys standing in the ring essentially doing the exact same thing as the week before and the week before that.
i remember it starting with triple h's never ending promos on raw from like 2004 on.

Sadly, the long winded opening promo has been a staple of RAW since like, 99/00.

I just don't have time to watch a 20 minute match that means absolutely nothing but time filler.

Raw should be used as a tool to build towards PPV matches, and that's a big issue with the 3 hour Raws since they use long matches to fill time. That being said, I do think WWE could stand to shake up the routine of how they present talking segments week-to-week. Open with a contract signing or the Highlight Reel/Ambrose Asylum. Open with a quick squash match and then get into promos. There are ways to do the same thing every week without doing the same thing every week.

I'm not against the long opening. Yeah it's longer than some TV shows but Raw is 3 hours long. like others have said longer matches are for ppvs and raw is for story building and hyping the next event

Back in the attitude era the first hour of raw is war was all talking and one match then second hour was called war zone and had 3-4 matches

It doesn't bother me at all. I love the storytelling aspect of wrestling. I wish there was more it. RAW and SD IMO should be more storyline based w/ the longer matches saved for the big events. I was watching a 1997 ep of RAW and they had about 4 different parallel story lines running all for DX at the same time (HBK vs Bret the night after SSeries97, HBK vs Owen revenge for his brother, DX vs LOD was the TV fued, DX forming an alliance with NAO to take out LOD, NAO vs Foley & Funk). All of that was going on at the same time and it was epic as hell. Those guys didn't have 20 min matches on RAW.
Side note, a few weeks ago I got so annoyed w/ KO and AJ having that 5 star match on RAW, with the winner qualifying for the MITB match. They went through a crap ton of moves and although it was good, it wasn't needed then. It makes it less special when we see it on the PPV.

I don't think the problem is the show opening with a promo, I just find most of those promos to be terribly stale. They all follow the same exact format; one guy comes out, talks for five to ten minutes, guy he's talking about comes out, then either more wrestlers or an authority figure come out (unless the authority figure opened the show) and the main event is set for the night. It's been this way for at least five years.
Why can't promos ever take place anywhere other then in the ring or backstage? That's what made the Shield promos special, and the Wyatts now, having unique locales. What about when guys like Edge and Cena drove to the river and fought, or when The Rock had his trailer park trash funeral for Stone Cold? The storytelling aspect is probably my favorite aspect of wrestling, but it's just so damn stale now. Nothing suspends my disbelief; wrestlers barely do promos in anything more than their wrestling gear and one of their t-shirts that you can buy on Shopzone. Hell, they barely even have entrance gear anymore, because they need to sell those tees.

Let me not start on grown men talking in their underwear. Put some damn hoop shorts or pants on. I swear it's the little stuff that irks me about WWE. You can tell it's laziness. They have a ton of producers, you telling me no one tells Orton to slip some jeans on to go out there to confront whomever? Jericho & Miz are are the only people that come to mind that actually dresses appropriately for their in ring interviews.
