I saw a thread that was over 2 years old and rather than dig that one up, I am hoping a new one might provide some new insight. I am planning on meeting Scott Hall and Kevin Nash at Steel City next month and I really want them to sign figure packaging with a paint pen. I bought one at Walmart today that was an acrylic paint pen and I think it was just very cheap quality. The brand was "Painters" which is an Elmer's product. But after it dried, I could scrape it right off and if it got wet, it also came right off.
What have people had good experiences with in paint pens? Sharpie brand? Oil or water based? I am hoping I can get some good advice before I go. Thanks!!

Are they water based? Durable? My biggest fear is something rubbing it off sometime in the future

There's oil based and water based pens. Oil is harder to get off than water but water based flow better when signing. I go with water based when I get autos as I know they can scratch off but they are being displayed.

I actually saw the Sharpie ones posted above at Target yesterday. They must be coming out with all the back to school stuff.

Is there any major difference long-term in oil-based versus water-based? Does one necessarily hold up better long-term than the other? Sunlight? I've used oil-based so far but am always open to suggestions. Also if anyone has any suggestions for colors for Sting DM autos, let me know. Thinking white for the black/white one and blue or red for the GAB one.

Flair Forever is right. Oil based sharpie pens are amazing and they don't fade over time. On a side note I'm jealous of his signed classics!

Whatever you choose just make sure it's prepped!

One more follow-up -- how long do they stay "good" after being initially prepped? I have some from maybe two months ago but worry about them drying up at the worst possible time ... will probably buy some new ones just to be safe but would rather not do that every time. Do you guys prep them the day before? Day of? Etc., etc. Meeting Sting and Luger next week so want them to be working perfectly, lol ...

Deco is the way to go from what I've read. BTW, how do you 'prep' these markers?

Sharpie Oil Based Paint Pen - Medium Point
Water based is good too but very runny/leaky, especially if you don't know what you're doing

When I met Jimmy Hart a few months back I went to Walmart before and bought a Deco and brought with me just an empty elite card and followed directions on marker and made sure it signed nicely on the card before I had Jimmy use it.

Spend the extra money and import Pilot Markers from England. The bay has them. Ive been using the same blue one for over a year. Ive been using the same red one since October of 2015. NEITHER one has run dry on me and both have been used over a dozen times. They only need to be primed ONCE, at the initial opening. They remain ready to go still. I dont know why....they just do. Amazon happens to carry Gold and Silver sometimes. They are DEFINITELY more expensive, but absolutely worth it.
I still carry Decos. I like the blue from Deco better because its a darker shade. But I do not carry anymore Deco silvers or gold or red or anything else. Only Deco Blue. Decos just dry up quicker, especially if they are not in use constantly. My blue gets probably a monthly use and remains good. Still needs primed though.

No worries, dude. Don't think I mentioned it really above but I've had lots of success with oil-based Sharpie paint pens. Not an expert by any means but they've worked great so far!
