97 degrees. The thermometer in the window of the trailer said 97 degrees. With humidity it felt like 110. It was too hot to do much of anything, much less cook a pot of mash. The problem was, the season was winding down and LeeRoy was behind. Last summer the rain had played hell with the moonshine season, and this season the heat was doing the same. LeeRoy took a sip of his PBR, and sighed. Nothing could be done about it, if he passed out from the heat carrying the bag of cracked corn to the still site, he could be found out, or worse, die from the heat. If he did make it to the site it would be too dangerous with the heat to cook the mash anyway. So he was stuck.
“Well, I guess I may as well head out” LeeRoy said out loud. He wasn’t sure why he had, as he was the only one around. It was that way ever since Cherry had died. Boy did LeeRoy miss that dog. She had been the perfect companion, never said much, and always listened to what LeeRoy had to say, unlike Sherry, whom he had fought with constantly. LeeRoy was almost relieved when he came home that night 2 months ago to find her stuff gone and a note explaining that she was done trying. Funny how it always seemed to be that way, LeeRoy had always gotten along with dogs better than people, much less females. No matter how hard he tried, LeeRoy just could not figure out what they wanted. Although if he were being honest, LeeRoy had to admit that he wasn’t the easiest to live with. The life of a moonshiner was not easy, always on the lookout for the law, being out in the mountains all the time, and the money issues. When the weather cooperated, and everything went right, you could make A LOT of money. The problem was, at least for LeeRoy, that it rarely did. Oh well, he’d find another lady friend soon, he always did.
LeeRoy jumped on the 4 wheeler, and turned towards the swimming hole. On a day like today that was the only place to get some relief. It didn’t take long to reach it, and LeeRoy jumped right in. After swimming for about a half an hour, LeeRoy climbed up into the little cave behind the falls. He loved to sit up here and think about things, and boy, did LeeRoy have a lot to think about.
He had always enjoyed the WFWF on tv, but it wasn’t until the weather had turned on him did LeeRoy think about actually becoming a wrestler. It wasn’t like he had a lot of options, outside of moonshining; LeeRoy was only good at wrestling, so when the money dried up, he had to do something. So now here he was, about to have his first match, and just like everything else LeeRoy had ever done, he was having second thoughts. Was he really capable? Had he gotten in over his head? It wasn’t like he was facing some nobody, like that big knucklehead that everyone had gotten a great nostril view of at exodus. No, he was in a tag match with the damn Thunderbirds. The dadgum Thunderbirds, who had just wrestled the match of their life for the tag titles, only to come up just short, so now they’d be pissed and out to really make a statement. LeeRoy blew air through his lips. “Too late to back out now old boy” he said to himself. And it was, as often as LeeRoy had second thoughts; he also never backed down from a challenge, hence the fact that he was STILL making ‘shine, even though he had a “real” job now. LeeRoy climbed down and hopped on the 4 wheeler, it was time to go work out. “Wait ‘til they get a load of old’ LeeRoy, they’ve never seen anyone like me, they don’t know what’s coming”.
