Once again, sorry if this has been posted already. So as I mentioned in a thread earlier this week, I'm somewhat new to collecting. For years I collected LJN's and Hasbro's when I was a kid. So about a month ago I guess I decided after seeing some cool figures in the store that i wanted to get back to the game so to speak. Well, fast forward to now and I have a nice little collection of Elite's and DMs.
Now onto my question. I know there are folks that open ALL their figures and I know there are folks that keep everything MOC.
So for those that have loose figures and MOC ones, how do you decide what you open and what you leave in the packaging? Do you always buy 2 of the same ones? Do you buy them, hold onto them and see if they end up being rare finds and if not then you open them?
I'm interested in seeing what folks say on the topic. I have most of my figures MOC, but I've been thinking of methods of display and I'm thinking I want to open more for a cooler display.
So.....what do YOU do?

Flashbacks only I buy some for loose, I buy some for moc. Sometimes I buy one of each. My loose collection are my sons toys. He only needs one version of each wrestler but I might buy multiples to keep for me.

I buy two of each superstar. I keep one MOC to get signed hopefully then the other I open up. There are exceptions. Since the DMs looks sweet in the box I keep those sealed. I also buy every sting, warrior and savage that comes out.

I buy two of figures of designs I really like or have nostalgia for, when it comes to which one gets opened, it'll be the one with more flaws, like my recent DM Warrior, one kneepad is perfect and the other one says "Ultmate Manacs", so he'll be the one that takes a beating. Hopefully I can find a flawless one someday, they were either overlapping or not connecting, or the tights designs went on to his "skin".

If Mattel adapted the style of the figures which we cannot name then this wouldn't even be a topic because it could be both ways.

You know all those stories you hear about figures breaking... figure's torsos being stained from dyed fabric shirts... shiny belts fading... loose joints... etc...
Well, you never have to worry about that crap if you leave them MOC or MIB!
I love how new and clean figures look in the packaging, and I don't think there has ever been a time I haven't been disappointed with a figure upon opening.
Not to mention the display advantages. MOC or MIB figures can be lined up all nice and tidy on shelves and never fall over if someone bumps into your shelving unit. Heck, if you want them displayed for everyone to see, you can use shelves or hang them on the wall.
Packaged figures are also easier to keep clean as dust can easily be wiped off of the flat top of a box or card instead of having it clog every nook and cranny of a loose figure.
Just my opinion mind you. I'm sure loose collectors can think of a million ways loose is better as well.

So far so good. Great responses and this shows me why this place is killer.
NOT ONE RESPONSE ABOUT SELLING THEM. We have the real collectors here folks. Awesome!

I just open them. If you want to pose them, play with them, animate them or just display, then do it. I find that keeping them moc is tempting. Not that I'm against collecting moc, (most respect to you guys) but for me it's like buying a car and just staring at it without putting it to use.

I have about 100 loose and about 50 moc
If I had the room, I'd have a good 75% of my collection still in the boxes

I get moc collecting and do have some moc stuff. But to me, Elites are wasted moc. Basics, especially with the new themed packaging, are a happy medium.

I display loose, but I get doubles when I like a figure enough.....However, the RSC exclusives are the only ones I usually do that.

Now, I have a couple of them, but I've basically decided I was going full out Elite and DMs only. Helps me keep my spending down too so there's always that.

When legends were introduced I didn't like the package so I opened them. Also I kept all my Jakks Cs MOC so I wanted to display these. Then the flashbacks came around i really liked the packaging so I kept them MOC. Once they changed Elite packaging when Bruno came out I started opening again. Now I am loose collector but have elite 38 on flashbacks MOC because I have no where to display them anywY
