So I have a little shi-tzu that is 16 years old and is blind. Recently I had moved into an apartment where dogs were not allowed (as did my parents), and my old neighbors took him in for me (as they would do while I would go on vacation or other trips). Yesterday I got the call from my neighbor that he couldn't stand and his head was tilted. She ran him to the vet and after the tests, they concluded that he suffered a stroke. They gave him meds and special food to see if it improved him at all and as of this morning no luck.
So now I basically have no choice but to put him down. I understand his is old and does not deserve to be in this pain, but this is the only dog I have ever had and he has been with us since I was 10 years old. I guess all I'm trying to say is that I don't know how to handle the situation and/or deal with having to put an animal down.....
Any suggestions, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The best advice I can give is that it's not selfish to put a dog down, it's only selfish of you to keep it alive because you don't want him to go.

It's been almost a year since I had to put my dog down after having him for almost 15 years. I still miss him daily, but I know it was the right thing. It sounds like it is the right time for you as well. No need for your dog to suffer by trying to delay the inevitable. This comic made me cry, but also helped me as well. I hope it helps you too. I went through this experience back in September when I had to put my dog down. It's a sad, terrible and heart breaking decision but it had to be done.
If and when you do it, just know that their suffering is over and will be in a better place.
I had my dog since I was 19 and I'm 36 now, so that's 17 years by my math. That's a hell of a stretch. I'm so fortunate to have had her for that long.
I miss her terribly and think about her all the time.
I love her so much so that I got her paw print and ashes back. Plus, I plan on getting a real nice portrait tattoo of her on my arm.
When you have an animal for a length of time like I have, they are more than a pet. That's family at that point.
In the end, just know you will have done the right thing and remember all the good times you shared with them.
It'll be very hard but I suppose it does get a bit easier as time rolls on.
Sorry for the rant there. I am so sorry you are going through this process and sorry for your loss.

Our last dog suffered two strokes about two years apart from each other. It's not quite the same as a human suffering a stroke and there seems to be more room for a dog to recover. It's really tough to gauge though, especially since your dog is as old as mine was when she had the second and we had to put her down. She was also the dog that I grew up with (lived seventeen years since I was eight years old) so I understand how hard this can be. If you think he's really suffering, then take solace in knowing that you're going to bring that suffering to a close.

I had dropped about $8,000 in the course of a month so I could get extra time out of her. When the second set of treatment didn't go as well as I hoped the Vet told me that to kind of make me realize, to put me at ease, and to not see me spend another several thousand that I was ready to do. I lost it, but once it was done I felt a big weight off my shoulders. In hindsight I wish I did it sooner for her.

It's heartbreaking. I had to do it once when I was 16 for the dog that had been with me since I was born. I cried a lot over it back then but time makes things better. There will soon be lots of new things to take your attention away from the hurt.

Nothing anyone can say will take the hurt away, but we're pulling for you. Be strong.

Sorry for what you're going through. I was never a dog person until my sister got one 7 years ago. Now I love them. It's a very tough decision to euthanize a pet. But like others have said, it won't be in any more pain or discomfort. It's one of the last signs of love that you can do for a pet. Just keep thinking about all the great times that the dog has given you. A pet may be just something, but you're everything to them. Know that you gave him the best life possible, and he made your life special too.

Thank you guys for all the advice and support, it means ALOT.
We ended up putting him down today after taking him for a drive around town to get some things, and while holding him he just peed all over me and didnt move. He just couldn't control it anymore.
It was the most heartbreaking thing i ever had to do next to my cousin dying, but seeing him unable to walk and control his bladder was reassuring to me that we did the right thing.
I know that he's in a better place now and I cannot wait to see him again.
Thanks again, this is why I love wf

But at the same time it made me feel better too. Sometimes we just need to feel.

Sorry to read this news. It's never easy to say goodbye.
I had a Cairn Terrier for 14 years, from when I was 6 until I was 20. He had to be put down because of an enlarged heart.

This is why having a pet tortoise is great, because you don't have to do this.

Being honest you will feel better knowing your best friend is no longer suffering than keeping your dog alive in pain, it is for the best and I'm sorry you have to make this decision, my dog is only a year old and I can't imagine making this choice myself.
