First, it was the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, then the WWE World Championship when the WWE Universal Championship was introduced, and now this week both on SmackDown! and on the website, it's constantly being referred to as the WWE Championship or WWE Title.
What's it officially called, and why do they feel the need to keep changing it?

They keep changing it because they don't know what it's called either.

Things certainly got unnecessarily convoluted with title names once the brands split. I'm with Jeremiah. As uninspiring as the title designs are, they may as well just simplify the names too.

The reason why they have changed it yet again is simple. John Cena has returned this past week and is going for his 16th Title. However, because all 15 aren't just 'WWE Championships' as some were 'World Heavyweight Championships', they categorise his runs as simply 'World Championships', as it includes both Titles. Therefore, they now need to differentiate AJ Styles belt from the 'WWE World Championship' to now become the 'WWE Championship' again, otherwise it would sound like Cena has had 15 runs with AJ's Belt which would exclude the World Heavyweight Title runs.

This theory makes the most sense. They have to find a way to legitimize Cena's title reigns at all costs.

no but in all seriousness...it's the WWE Championship.
They will never actually change the name officially because it's their title, that started all those years ago. Its not going to be called "Smackdown Champion" or whatever because they wanto (and should) keep the lineage of that belt going as long as the company is in existence.
But like when they bought WCW, they wanted to bury it...so they combined the two world titles and called it undisputed, but that was only in the gimmick....you still were WWE Champion. then they split and brought back the WCW title but they weren't going to call it WCW Champion because WCW was dead...so that became the generic World Heavyweight Champion...but WWE Champion still existed. And so on.

I honestly think they should just be the SmackDown! and RAW Championships. Yup, because that's exactly what they are. Go on about lineage and whatever, but to make the brand split seem legit and as prestigious as each other... I wouldn't even be 100% against giving the Smackdown title a blue strap.

I think the championship looks fine the way it is and it shouldn't be called the Smackdown Championship because then it sounds wrong and confusing when you reference the past. Like "In 2006 Edge won the Smackdown Championship on RAW in a Triple Threat match".

It wasn't called that back then though, just like the Raw tag team titles weren't called the Raw tag team titles back when they were a Smackdown exclusive. With all the effort they've put into making the brand titles seem equal, the only inconsistency left is the strap on the Smackdown title and it kinda devalues the universal title. It's such an annoyingly, unnecessary problem but it's all their own fault for messing around with something so simple.

It honestly doesn't really matter because the WWE can change whatever they want to fit their story (see New Day breaking Demolition's record when even their OWN website states that the lineage for the titles is different) That being said...Chip nailed it.

AJ is the WWE Champ. Same title greats like Bruno, Hulk, Bret, Austin, etc... held.
The Universal Title is a joke and less pretentious than the IC and US Titles at the moment.
