There's a reason guys have left the company and gone on to become much happier than when they were there. When you combine the schedule, travel, backstage politics and how badly things are creatively, it's just not worth it in this day and age. Ryback said it best on his podcast - if you're content with collecting a paycheck while being in the same position within in the company with no indication that it will ever change no matter how long you're there, then that's great. But several guys have decided within recent years that they would rather do things on their own terms and wrestle a few shows in the indies here and there while not having to deal with the stress of being stifled creatively and the insane amount of travel these guys do. I remember Punk saying after he left that he basically didn't leave his bed for a week because it was the longest he had been home in years. I always laugh when people hate on part-timers like Lesnar, Goldberg, etc. for "collecting a check" and making it seem like they're just mailing it in every week. A lot of people don't understand the toll I would imagine that all that traveling takes on you physically and mentally. If you have earned the right to call your own shots, and the company is willing to work with you, then good for you.

half a million a year is supposedly the average wwe salary. as well as a lot of drive and passion unquestionably. Source? I doubt midcarders on the main roster, who are the average WWE wrestler, make that kind of money. It is a complete myth that pro wrestlers make a lot of money, even in the WWE. They are independent contractors with no medical benefits and are responsible for their own transportation and hotels on the road. Randy Orton said he estimates road expenses for fulltime wrestlers to be about $100,000/yr.

Fame, boyhood dream, passion, limited skills outside of athletics, failed athletes.. etc.. There is a multitude of reasons.
I think low to midcard WWE talent are underpaid honestly but it's not like there's much they can do when no viable high-paying alternative exists.

Like you said, the take home is going to be 350-400k or less after factoring in travel, accommodations, and miscellaneous. That doesn't seem too far-fetched.

When the WWE was giving away $1 million (over 4 years) to a wrestler off the street for Tough Enough, Rob Van Dam asked John Laurinitis if he could try out for it because himself and others in the locker room wasnt making that kind of money.

Lots of money, surrounded by hot women all day, passionate fan base, fame, being able to be an athlete into your 40s or 50s, travel and get to see the world. Anything else?[/quote Yeah that's all very well and good, but there's a downside to it aswell - injuries, early deaths, drug abuse e.t.c..

If you're an athletic extrovert that loves to travel, I see very few drawbacks of being a WWE Superstar.

Some people just love to perform. I'm an actor, I've done theater, movies, I've been on TV, I've also done indy wrestling. I'm a whore for the attention. It's like a drug and you can't get enough. And the money and women make it so much more worth it.

I can't see any reason, honestly. It's a dying business. It's like trying to become a hair metal star now. Mötley Crüe was a thing in the 80s. Just like wrestling. Now? Not really.

It's a childhood dream and it's not like it's easy getting to the wwe in the 1st place.

How cool would it be to do the thing you grew up watching? I know if I got the opportunity to become a wrestler and start training I would do it in a heartbeat.

There seems to some some misconception that just because a few guys left and were unhappy, that everyone on the entire roster is miserable. And they're trapped. I'd be willing to bet, the rosters are full of people that wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Truth is, there are probably people who take pictures of naked women all day, and they still complain about their boss and the long hours. That's SOME people's mentality. Doesn't make it fact.

People say it wouldn't be fun today but back then it didn't seem much better with JBL and Bob Holly bullying rookies.

In a way its never been more fake than it is now. Perhaps it is this reason why WWE is waning. I see Lana on Total Divas speaking with an american accent...I see guys talking out of character on twitter I dont see how that helps any storyline/feud, its sooooo exposed now its ridiculous and before any smart ass buts in and says "well we always knew it was fake"...atleast they should try and keep some things in-house or stop tweeting and actually make an effort to keep some sort of aspect of your character secret. I see fans in the front row when a wrestler is right next to them, what do they do? they grab their phones and start recording for a video rather than live for the moment and enjoy being next to a wrestler.
I do like wrestling but it frustrates me at times. A lot of people talking about money and women are totally missing my point. Then you got instagram, a self obsessed heaven for show offs who find it fun to upload selfie after selfie after selfie. Some of the men are worse than the girls at it, you got the Rock juiced to the gills in his 40s and more pumped up than a guy half his age full of steroids, HHH doing workouts at midnight and boasting about it like hes great, you got women deadlifting so they can get a "nice ass"...I mean cmon, its pathetic. Its pure and utter self indulgent b.s, lets call it like it is. I think all the vanity in WWE and social media in general is putting out all the wrong messages, like you gotta look like this and if you dont then you feel like the odd one out. Its no wonder so many girls and boys have got body issues in this day and age. Its garbage and I find myself watching less and less TV nowadays because of all this crap.

Used to be a thing that fat hairy guys could do on their day off from being garbage men, but now it's so much work. I wish I lived in the 70's.
