I was watching NXT tonight and Cien came on and I can't stand him in that way that even if you told me he was gonna get destroyed or was facing my favourite wrestler...I'd still change the channel or fast forward through his match.
This seems to be the kind of heat a lot of wrestlers are getting nowadays, that kind of heat where people don't want to see them and it pushes them away the more TV time these kinds of stars get.
Now that might not be Cien specifically for everyone, but I'm wondering if people think this is a problem with the current product.
I think WWE has started to think that heat is heat and whatever gets a reaction is a good thing but I get the feeling they're pushing and going to push more, a lot of stars who get really strong bad heat where people are doing essentially the reverse of what happened when Mick Foley won the WWF Title on RAW.
The kind of heat someone like...Vince Russo would get...do you guys think that WWE is starting to push a lot of "change the channel" types of content, not understanding the difference?
I'm always going to watch wrestling, but I find there are times when I fast forward or skip whole episodes or even just start watching highlights and in a time where TV is so competitive and a lot of people would rather stream, I feel it's something they might have trouble with.

The evidence would point to a solid 'NO'.

Who is Cien? Is he another Roman type guy who gets booed out of buildings?

Who is Cien? Is he another Roman type guy who gets booed out of buildings? Andrade "Cien" Almas. He debuted last year at TakeOver: The End and I guess he was meant to be this huge star, Lucha Libre background, worked in New Japan he's amazing! But they had him beat Dillenger in his debut, he fizzled out incredibly quick, lost to Roode at TakeOver: Brooklyn II, then turned on Cedric during the Dusty Classic and now is a guy who loses big matches but doesn't care because he goes out to clubs and parties and yeah. I think he's booed because of his debut and it's never really been explained what the he's supposed to be. He calls himself El Ídolo/The Idol but The Idol to who? He's also Cien meaning he's 100?

Do they understand it? Absolutely. Do they care? Not a bit when it comes to Roman Reigns.

Unless there is competition WWE will never care what the fans think.

They only care that you are making noise and buying merch This. Look at Roman.. the internet hates him and he gets booed regularly but the crowd reacts to him and he moves merch. However, more people used to watch wrestling than currently watch wrestling. That's definitely something to take notice of. - may be the only thing I've ever agreed with Mark Madden about

Yeah. Count me in the "they probably know the difference, but don't care because there is a reaction" crowd. This is why that don't react to Roman thread was a thing. You can't blame WWE if the audience isn't going to treat "I hope that guy gets his ass beat" and "I wish that guy would off" heat differently. That's on us, not WWE. We've seen tons of people get X-pac heat in the last 15 years. They've largely monopolized on it. I do think Eva was a big missed opportunity there though. Regardless, as long as we, the audience, continue to treat the heat exactly the same then so will WWE.

I honestly don't even believe that Roman moves that much merch. You don't see hardly any of his shirts in the crowd. Even during height of Super Cena, he had an even 50/50 split of boos and cheers. You also seen tons of Cena shirts, wrist bands, heads bands etc in the audience. Roman is universally hated by every single arena he steps foot in. If WWE made the claim that he moves merch, I'd consider it another lie in an effort to protect him. It's honestly a complete mystery what they see in him.
To me, Vikki Guerrero had the best heat out of anyone in the last decade. Miz would be a close second.

WWE is a very different company than it was before it went public. Honestly it doesn't matter and they don't care as long as you are still watching and subscribing. The only thing that matters to them are network subs, ticket sales, merch sales, tv deals, ad rates, and their stock price. Whether or not fans are enjoying the show or characters is way down the list.

They know the business far better than any of us ever will. To pretend otherwise is foolish.
Almas is great by the way. His heel turn has made him a weekly highlight IMO.

Do the fans understand how to convey good and bad heat? No. If you boo, then the WWE sees that as whatever they're doing its generating a response. Booing is just as good as cheers to them. If you want to see someone go away then be quiet and give them no reaction. That is how you send a statement to WWE. Not booing.

Andrade Cien Almas has been outstanding since his heel turn....I'm not sure what you're watching.
Dude shouldn't be losing all of his matches, he's gotten very comfortable and has become one of my favorite heels in NXT.

I was watching Impact several years ago; this was back when Jeff Jarrett wouldn't let go of the top spot in the company. I think this was back in their NWA days. He was doing some promo in the ring when a VERY loud chant of "drop the title" rang or from the crowd. So he smirked and literally dropped the title on the canvas and muttered something about marks.
I believe that this is how WWE looks at its audience today.

In general, WWE understands the difference a lot better than fans who whine about WWE do. There are probably people who cry that Roman Reigns has 'X-PAC heat' who popped like crazy when Strowman destroyed him.

Like some others alluded to ...... the company works differently now. It isn't a life and death situation for strong reactions to be had. They are public and the money flow has a lot more to do with other things now - not just soley on if the superstars get over or not. The unfortunate thing is that it causes a lot of weirdness and disillusion. It doesn't seem right when the guy pushed as too baby face is being booed and his opponent is being cheered for nearly killing him. There is a huge disconnect between how they push forward their show and how people react and go against the story presented. In almost any case, that would mean the product or the art is failing but WWE has all kinds of other financial things happening
