Former WWE writer Kevin Eck recently appeared on Wade Keller’s podcast and talked about how Baron Corbin needs to deliver in the match against John Cena at Summerslam. Eck recalled his time in WWE and discussed how talents are judged based on their performances with Cena:
“Cena will be very honest to his assessment of you. Dolph Ziggler’s the first guy that comes to mind, when they had a singles program together, in the beginning, John was all for it. John wanted to work with Dolph. And they did the house show loop together and as the heel, the heel traditionally calls the matches and John was letting Dolph call the matches and he wasn’t impressed.”
“And apparently John gave his assessment to Vince of Dolph and I think that sort of played into Vince’s thoughts already about Dolph and once that program ended it ended rather abruptly because Vince told us in a booking meeting one day: ‘God, I think we’re doing a disservice to John, this is bringing John down’ and so Dolph was moved out of that program.”

Dolph was a fantastic heel and red hot at the time, so I'm sure there will be plenty of people that bash Cena for "burying" him. But from the sounds of this, it's more about the way Dolph carried himself in the ring and behind the scenes, which isn't exactly Cena's fault.

how many years ago was this? i'm surprised that cena didn't call the match - a lot of the reasoning behind heels calling the match is because traditionally the heels were older more experienced wrestlers as opposed to the babyfaces who were usually younger and less experienced.

I always thought Ziggler tried to work way too fast for a while there and it killed him. Just stuff like when he'd do the punches in the corner thing, he'd spam the shots like a lunatic, way too fast for fans to count along to 10 like they enjoy doing. Lots of little things like that. And I think in the long run things like that began to hurt him.

Didn't Dolph win that feud though? Lol No. No, he didn't. I'm pretty sure it ended with Cena going over him in a cage match, despite Ziggler having help from both Big E and AJ.

How long was the Cena/Ziggler program supposed to last then if Cena was going to win the Rumble in January setting up Rock/Cena II?

B.S considering Dolph beat him for the MITB briefcase and then Dolph cashed in the case to win.. Obviously Cena won the feud, heels rarely win the feuds, especially if it's with Cena. Only heels to ever close feuds with Cena since 2006, with them winning are Edge and JBL.

Wasnt this the feud with AJ Lee? I remember hearing Cena wanted to work with Ziggler, and I remember thinking the matches were pretty damn good..
Assuming this is correct, then maybe its Cena to blame for Sami Zayns crappy booking.

and people think Hogan and HHH have big egos..... If this is true, and Cena didn't like how Dolph worked, how does this mean he has a big ego? The fact that Dolphs sarcastic ass couldn't help but make a joke about taking Cena's five moves not too long after this didn't exactly help.

Only heels to ever close feuds with Cena since 2006, with them winning are Edge and JBL. Per a former writer from that time period, Vince made it clear that they weren't pushing Ziggler when he cashed in the case - they were only doing it for the reaction of the Post-Mania crowd. Also, what exactly did cashing in the case do for Dolph? Sure, he had the concussion, but he dropped right out of the title picture afterwards and did pretty much nothing until Survivor Series '14 (which also lead to nothing for him).

A feud that did nothing for either man at a time when interest was lower than before. (For me)
