replace straps on kid size belt?

I have a couple of the kid size belts and I think they are a great alternative, but the odd strap length kills me. Does anybody have a way to remove the plugs on the plates to cleanly remove the plates, or am I stuck slicing this belt up to remove the plates? Even after I manage that I'll have to get the plates on a new piece of leather with those massive plugs.
