I don't watch the NBA much but can someone explain the NBA referee scandal? I think it has to do w/ refs favoring a team and calling unnecessary fouls.

Tom Donaghy gave bettings tips to people based on which referees were assigned to what games and what said referees' tendencies to call games were.
He apparently did not admit to affecting the outcome of any games on his own.

He also bet on games, as well. Not games he was reffing, but he used his knowledge to make money.

So he studied how other refs did their "reffing style" and used that info to guess the outcome based on how that ref refs? I don't see anything wrong with that unless you think betting is wrong.

Well, because as an official you aren't allowed to gamble. It puts you in situations that can impact the integrity of the game.

I'm not entirely updated on this news lately either, but the crap's gonna hit the fan if they find out he gambled on games he officiated.
