Owen would have been great. He could say that he proved himself to truly be the King Of Harts by defeating Bret in the cage match.

The only What Could've Been I've ever been interested in is Muhammad Hassan. They could have just hot shotted him up the card to capitalize on the hatred of his character (or at least given him a US title run). But no, the brain children had to air a segment that became all the more controversial because of the tragedy that had happened the same day.

rob van dam would’ve been ‘the guy’, but both his pot usage and wrestling culture changing that stopped that.

Pretty much everyone who should’ve gotten a world title did get one. In the old days, the title changed hands a lot less, and nobody on the roster was a better choice than Hogan, Savage or Warrior when they had it. In the modern era, even scrubs like Swagger and Ziggler get at least a short run with it.

Bruce Pritchard goes in-depth on Something to Wrestle with on all of this in a Muhammad Hassan episode which is a great listen. IIRC UPN aired it because it was too late to edit or cut out so they aired a graphic at the start of the show. I believe it was cut out of the UK broadcast because SmackDown would air a day after here but it’s a shame they got rid of the Hassan character, he was amazing. It would interesting to know what wrestling would be like had Eddie Guerrero not passed away as his death essentially kicked off the whole wellness policy in WWE etc, plus the Benoit tragedy probably wouldn’t of happened either or Rey Mysterio becoming world heavyweight champion.

"Roddy" Piper shouldn't be on this list all. He was THE GUY to beat in the WWF at the time, Roddy never needed the title to get over and in all honesty the angle with Hogan would have been just as great if Hogan didn't have the belt at that time either. Hogan also never pinned Piper during that entire angle. At the War to Settle the Score Piper was disqualified. At WrestleMania 1 Orndorff ate the pin. While Hogan was the man at that time. Piper was the man to beat during that period. I still contest Piper should have taken the title from Hogan at The Wrestling Classic. Booking wise, you have your top guy chasing the heel Champion into the cage at WrestleMania 2. I don't think anyone disagrees Piper was an absolute mega star who was bigger than the title, but I think it made tons of sense to put it on him and have Hogan do the singles match with Piper and not Bundy. Vince is also lucky Piper didn't kill Mr. T on live PPV, but that's an aside to the situation. Piper and Owen Hart are always my answers for this question. I say those two in particular because there was a specific time and place to do it at the height of their popularity and Vince picked a worse guy in the spot. Piper with Bundy leading into Mania 2 and Owen with Bob Backlund at Survivor Series 94. There are a number of other guys I thought should have probably been WWF Champion, Mr. Perfect and Razor Ramon stick out, but I've never been able to work out specifically when they could have won the title based on their popularity or heel/face dynamic at the time.

The heat Hassan would get with a U.S. title run would have been insane.
