right around the time before Mayweather/Delahoya analysts were saying that this will be the last "Big fight" before MMA overtakes boxing as america's combat sport of choice. Do you agree with that or do you think its isnt true. lets hear it.

Boxing died when lenox Lewis retired
while on the other hand, MMA grew and is still growing after the Liddell loss

Yes.
Much like they way Baseball was "Americas sport" back in the day. Now football has completely taken over as being the most popular sport. Baseball is still popular but most people just find it too slow and too long of a game while football is kind of straight to the point with mor excitement. The attention span of the normal adult nowadays is ridiculous.
Thats why MMA is on top as far as physical contact sports go..Boxing is too slow and too easy to fix. Even if they tried to fix an MMA fight the fans would be able to tell.
MMA isn't going anywhere for awhile.

I think MMA has overtaken boxing, but boxing is still going decently strong.

Yeah, I would say MMA is growing increasingly popular and boxing will have a tough time catching up,
but boxing has been around for hundreds of years, so I wouldn't pull the cord just yet on the sport.

I do think MMA has surpassed boxing as the fight sport of choice EXCEPT for the occasional huge boxing event (De La Hoya-Mayweather for example). I think boxing can bring the numbers once or twice a year. But MMA definitely has more consistent success throughout the year in drawing ratings and attendance.
However, one can be popular without the other dying. I don't think it's a matter of one sport "beating" the other by surpassing it in profit, fan interest, etc. UFC came very close to dying out before Zuffa purchased the company, and look at them now. If UFC survived, boxing will survive, even if it plummets further in popularity.
The thing to remember is that it's a respected sport/fight discipline, so people will always be practicing it worldwide, even if fans aren't watching. The martial arts that UFC fighters use in their fights have been around for a very long time, but it's not like fans were swarming to watch Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu events, right?

Boxing is only ahead of MMA when it comes to the huge mega fights like recent DLH/Mayweather & upcoming Mayweather/Hatton fight. Boxing could hold it's own by promoting closely contested fights & putting big names stars against each other in risky fights. Unify all the titles & have PPV shows with more than one fight that people care about. However if it doesn't take this opportunity it will continue to lose interest to the point that event the HUGE mega shows don't attract interest

No, boxing is so far ahead of everything. </sarcasm> While the UFC, for the most part, has higher buyrates and attendance, someone who's not big sports buff might not know what MMA is, but pretty much everyone knows what boxing is.

boxing is too fragmented. people like mma because the majority of publicity surrounds one brand name - the ufc. in boxing there's 3 or 4 major organisations, each with about 15 "world titles" at different weights... the mma format is much simpler, the fights more exciting, and the hype that much grander. there's no competition outside of the sport...
