Well, I need a good football book. I know how the game is played and I understand basic strategies like running the ball to set up the pass or shutting down the run to force a young qb to go up against your secondary. What I don't get is all the intricacies of the game. I know the difference between the 3-4 and the 4-3, but not the advantages/disadvantages of the two. I don't really know a Cover 2 from a Cover 3 at a glance. I'm not sure what the pros and cons of the Run-and-Shoot over the West Coast or the Rams style of offense are. I know QB's will audible at the line of scrimmage because of something they see in the defense, but I don't know exactly what it is they see or what they're looking for. I know defenses will sometimes audible too, but again, I don't know what it is they're looking for in the offense. Can anyone recommend a good basic book that would go into all this?

I can't really help you as far as a book that explains the fundamental elements like you're looking for, but there's a book about football I read a few years back that you might find enjoyable and interesting nonetheless:
its called "Football Physics: The Science of the Game" by Timothy James Gay. you should be able to find it at your local library.
edit: i forgot to mention... I still can't think of any actual novels that go into detail about the intricacies of the game and whatnot, but one thing I could suggest is picking up one of the many, many "How-To" books for aspiring Pee Wee/High School football coaches. most of these books go into great detail and have color images to describe different defensive formations, offensive allignments, various infractions, etc
