Was I the only one super confused when these were announced? Seriously, I’m fine with them doing it. But they did it before (more than once) and they always drop them because of poor sales. I don’t see this one doing any better considering the re-released Finn/AJ and although I really want the Rey, that Joe/Rey 2 pack is another one nobody is going to buy. I’m consistently confused by everything Mattel does these days. Exactly. It's stuff like this that leaves these potentially awesome lines dead in the water.

Rey and Joe look amazing in concept. Can’t wait for that one. Thought it was one of the best things we saw at SDCC.
Lots of stuff I’d love to see but we’ve seen Elite 2-packs fail a couple times, specifically with Legends characters. I’m dying for them to make something wild that I desperately need like Kronik, Impact Players or Filthy Animals Rey and Kidman. I expect them to do the opposite and play it really conservative and put out stuff that’s mostly current roster like Finn/AJ and then Legends like a Razor/Shawn or Angle/Brock worked in every few sets.

If this line fails we’re going to need to have a sit down intervention with Bill on opening lineup choices because he’s an awesome designer but they always cut these lines off at the knees before they even get going
And I say that as someone who likes both sets in series 1

Shango/Warrior & Afa/Sika were cool 2 packs but didn't do that great. I forget their pricepoint.

it basically only took me under 10 minutes to put these together for the battle pack suggestions post a few months ago I just used all of them for this with now having to remove goldust completely but quickly replacing him with pillman then i added a few more people thats just recently under deals on it because everything here can be used in either line up basically but a lot of them mostly would benefit from being in the elite line now

If they do include flashbacks then it would be the perfect series to debut WCW tag belts and the silver plated WWF belts.

Maybe we should make them.” “Isn’t that what Shane and Miz called their team?” “I think so.” “Then let’s give em what they want.”

It seems like a lot of lines are doing $40 two packs after the fall of TRU, Marvel legends, Power Rangers, Neca Turtles, Dragon Stars, etc.

No chance these last.
Every Mattel offering that was more the $19.99 retail has failed.
Honestly, I am surprised the collector community is enough to keep the standard elite line afloat sometimes. I guess there is a good mix of collectors and rich parents who buy high end action figures for their kids (the few kids who actually still like playing with toys).
Lineups could have been better.
The Top Talents series really flooded the market with AJ's and Finn's. In addition to being repaints, that did this pack no additional favors.

This is the thing that constantly baffles me about Mattel, and they never seem to get called out on in Q&A's or by podcasters. They consistently seem to drop a giant turd to kick off lines, and then scratch their head when a line fails and then seemingly blame collectors.
Of the hundreds of wrestlers and attires at their fingertips, they can't come up with something that might be a little more inspired? A legend/modern mashup. NXT/main roster 2-pack? Hell, do the pancake attire New Day as Elites and I bet they'd sell. These pairings seem directed towards main roster buyers, who presumably are largely kids. I struggle to see how this cuts through the noise of available Elites for those characters, or the fact that a parent could just drop $20 on a basic 2-pack.
But even if you want to go all in with this concept...why rehash the same attires! I know some like the event-specific attires, but I don't think it makes much difference in a situation like this where many those attires have been released. And multiple times, for the blue AJ and red Joe. There are dozens of non-match specific AJ attires they could do that would sell well and be unique (lime green, baby blue, red, purple) or throw in Joe with yellow or blue shorts.
Instead they drop re-releases with slight tweaks, hope their consumers are total suckers, and will probably have this line killed off before the 2020 presidential election.

I like the line ups. Sure Balor/AJ is basically a reissue, but battle damage Balor is something different. Rey will sell, he just will. My son went ape sh*t for that set, didn’t care about Joe, but he wants that Rey badly - so I’ll be getting it for him.

The Top Talents series really flooded the market with AJ's and Finn's. In addition to being repaints, that did this pack no additional favors. I'm starting to think maybe it isn't. WWE's recent quarterly stockholder call noted a 13% drop in consumer products from 2018. There are a lot of things under that umbrella, but they specifically called out "lower royalties from the sale of toy products." Add in the decreasing viewership, and you have to wonder how they sustain it. That may partially explain why they're flooding figures of top names and seem terrified of taking a risk with deep cut figures. I just think they're barking up the wrong tree, and are ultimately alienating the deeper pocketed adult collectors.
