The complete history of Mattel's WWE Retros line! I tried to cover everything from start to finish, including the unreleased figures and why the line ended. Enjoy!

one of the worst lines ever. Agreed, it's the most half-hearted attempt at doing a retro line I've ever seen a toy company do. They looked more like blown up Fisher Price toys or Happy Meal pack-ins than an attempt to do the same style of figure that they were supposed to be paying homage to and it somehow broke people's brains and convinced them this is what the Hasbros looked like. Hope it never returns.

Hope it never returns. Yeah, I know the line has its share of fans. From a design perspective, most were just flat out bad. And it was yet another instance of Mattel either having zero understanding of their target audience, or willfully ignoring it. I did enjoy S2 that Bill designed. But whoever worked on the rest of the line couldn't have missed the mark more if they tried.

I hated them. I liked the concept. Hated who they selected for the line and the execution.
I wanted guys who would have fit in the Hasbro line. Almost none did. I didn't want to see Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens and Sami zayn. The plastic did feel cheap and flimsy.

If you have Roman Reigns, Ric Flair, Diesel, Goldust, Junkyard Dog and Macho Man Randy Savage from this line...$$$$$$

Loved this line and still hope it's brought back one day.
I'll never understand people complaining about modern stars in the line. You expect retro wrestlers in modern toylines, but you lose your mind at the idea of modern wrestlers in your retro toylines?
During the attitude era I wanted nothing more than attitude era figs for my Hasbro collection because I liked the scale and style. And the Retro line finally gave them to me, along with a bunch of other modern favourites.

It's mostly that the current guys looked bland and boring as sh*t and people would have rather had classic guys since the line itself was, y'know, based on action figures from the early 1990s. This one's not hard to figure out. The top guys like Cena, Brock, Roman, I never had an issue with. Ryder, Broken Hardyz, Elias, Wyatt, Nakamura, Sheamus...there was no reason to do those guys over classic characters. There was a point where these were $15 at stores. Most kids were probably going to get a $10 basic or an elire for a few dollars more over these. This line was basically aimed at older collectors with the hope that the mobile app bullsh*t would make it appealing to kids.

I liked the line and thought it did ok. I was excited when I saw the undertaker fig and started only collecting the old school wrestlers but decided to get them all since I was able to find them at 5 below and Ringside had some good prices on them.
I do agree that they do look and feel cheap compared to the WWF Hasbro figures but I am able to look past that because they brought back a nostalgic feeling for me as I'm sure they did for many collectors out there.
I hope if or when they do decide to bring the line back that they do make some improvements.

But it looks cool and well retro to people who were fans and collecting back then. If they could have done guys who were on the roster 1989 through 1994, new looks for some previous hasbro releases and managers or personalities like mean gene, vince, etc. Just make it a 100% retro line.

People are quick to give Bill a tug over that AE set but we should have gotten a New Gen set instead. Something like Lawler, Mabel, Diesel, Heenan, Goldust and Sherri should have been series 2.

Also not surprising we have Bill to blame for Sting being both the crow gimmick nobody asked for and a ing jumper. Bill's Brain Worms strike again!

Whomever was responsible for the HBK hopefully was promptly fired and had a flat tire in the parking lot when he left the building.

This is total revisionist history. Some of the figures were great -- Series 1 and 2, Diesel, Goldust, JYD, even Flair and a few modern figures were great.
But as everyone said -- Mattel going cheap on things like deco, and HORRIBLE HORRIBLE character selection and distribution (the worst series -- 3,7,8 are the ones that got good distro, and then no one bought them because they were the worst line).
I really hope it comes back -- done well

I never would have known there was hate for this line. I only seem to remember huge anticipation for waves to release.
I'm too young to have had a Hasbro collection,in fact bought my first Wrestling Figure in 2014,so this style never interested me. Saying that I feel like this line has the most anticipation prior and buzz during its short existence of any I've seen thus far. Interesting to see some of the negative responses.

They ed this line up unbelievably! For every good thing there is like five bad! Also, the whole "at least we got Diesel thing" blows my mind as the figure is horrible. I would actually rank it as one of the worst they did.
