Where do you fall on this one? I can see arguments for both sides and personally feel like 1997 is its own thing entirely.

I say New Gen mainly for that logo still being on there almost the whole year. Definitely shades of grey with how edgy they were getting but my vote goes to NG.

New Generation. Just. 1997 was when it all started going downhill for me. same here. it was like our old school was still sprinkled in there with it for awhile with matches like the final four and guys like sid, vader, taker, bret still being around facing each other. then the attitude era took over. but yea it totally changed for the worse for me. ufc did too at same time. it went to weight classes and 4-man tournaments over 8-man no weight class tourny's. hated that back then. |

I voted Neither. It was a transitional period, not really New Generation, but not really Attitude either. Seeds were definitely planted for the Attitude Era though. Some other transitional periods I have are Summerslam 1991-Nov 1992: Hulkamania to New Generation Era Wrestlemania X7-Jan 2002: Attitude to Ruthless Aggression Era No Mercy 2007-Wrestlemania 25: Ruthless Aggression to PG Era/Age of Orton |

Attitude starts for me the night after Montreal. Bret was the New Generation. When he left he took it with him.

It was neither.....its a transitional year just like 2002 was. Vince & co were changing things up and seeing what the crowd would respond to...by August/September they had found their feet & were ready to go all in with Austin, DX etc.

I really do not think there is a right answer to be honest with you. It is something that is subjective, for me personally, the Attitude Era starts the night Bret Hart shoves down Vince McMahon. However, I can see why for some people it may not start until Survivor Series. As the Bret Hart thing happened earlier in the year I am going to vote for it being more in the Attitude Era.

I always saw it as when Shawn and Triple H teamed together for the first time on Raw in 97? I want to say around September maybe?

I say Attitude era. Granted it can be a blend of both. But I consider it Attitude because they really turned the corner from what they were doing, the old, gimmicky characters were going away, and new reality-based characters were appearing. Austin went from Ringmaster to Stonecold, HHH started doing less of the blue-blood character stuff and more of the DX stuff, Undertaker went from the old-west look to the goth look, Mankind started transitioning between three different characters (sort-of a multiple personalities disorder). Even the Hart Foundation became more edgy at this time. And they started introducing the women more frequently. It may not have been full-blown Attitude era, but it definitely was different than the New Generation era.

Attitude. I’ve always considered the unofficial start of the Attitude Era to be Survivor Series 1996. Austin was in his first, high profile match in the company and fans cheered bad-guy Sid like crazy on HBK. Bret’s slow-burn heel turn also began to take place here with Vince’s commentary. By the start of 1997 things were still evolving but Raw felt closer to “1998 Raw” than “1995 Raw”.

The WWF New Generation started the night Bret Hart won the WWF Title from Ric Flair in October 1992 and ended at Survivor Series 97 when he lost the WWF Title to Shawn Michaels.
The following night to me is when the Attitude Era started.

I think the Attitude Era began, at the earliest, when Raw is War/War Zone debuted shortly before WM13

Neither for me. I used to think that the AE started with Pillman’s got a gun. But I watched the whole of 97 last year and it was so unique that it deserves to stand alone.
The Attitude era was great but there was an undercurrent of silliness to it (not a slight) where I found 97 had more intensity to it (Monday Night Wars, Montreal, Austin breaking his neck, Racial groups etc) and deserves to stand in its own right.

I feel like the attitude era started May 27th 1996...once the Monday Night Wars REALLY took off, I think that was the end of the new generation.
