I have seen a lot of mixed reactions to this version of Kane, but for me this Kane did do what the character was supposed to do which was inflict fear, I do remember actually having nightmares of this Kane, I feel this was the best version of Kane because he did look scarier to me without the mask and did things like set JR on fire, tombstone Linda, electrocute Shane and had one of my favorite feuds from 03 with Shane McMahon, I know this fued also gets a lot of hate but for me it was way more entertaining than it should have been, I feel 2003 Kane was a huge improvement from 2002 as he did lose some of his scary monster stuff in return for comedy which was actually funny at times but did hurt the character, I think everyone can agree Corporate Kane was worst

Actually, yes. I’ve always said 2003 post mask up until the match with Undertake Kane is my favorite era of his career. He just felt like a legit monster, even though he feuded with Shane for a big chunk of it. It probably goes: 1. Unmasking up until Wrestlemania XX 2. Debut up until the night after KOTR 98 3. Tag team with Big Show in late 2005 4. Tag team with X-Pac 5. Absolute unit Kane in early 2001 I ing hate funny Kane. Just a little bit more than Kane in slacks.

By far the most sinister version of his character. I loved how he tortured and destroyed Shane during their feud.
I missed his mask and costume but he acted like an unstoppable monster.

we just had a discussion on this in the classics board. i liked 1997-2002 kane, including the shorter mask face run return.
he never really recovered career wise from his feud with triple h.

This was within my first year of watching wrestling, so some of the things he did after unmasking were legitimately scary to me. Prior to him unmasking, 02-03 is probably my favorite version of Kane. I'm very nostalgic to that first year/two years of being a fan.

Once the original full mask Big Red Machine left the WWF in early 2002 and came back with the half mask that killed Kane for me but when the mask completely came off that was the nail in the coffin on what made Kane unique.

Those first few weeks after he was unmasked was some of his best work, IMO. He was sinister, sadistic and to an 8-year-old me, he was terrifying.
Then they did the Taker feud, and the Lita stalking and I just thought he was pathetic after that.
(Don't get me wrong, I'm a Kane fan - but as a kid, 2004 turned him into a joke.)

In a way, taking the mask off in 2003 and putting him in chains, etc. gave him a re-start, almost the ability to take him back to 1997 in that he was (in many ways) debuting a new character/look. I think the match at WMXX hurt him. It was huge and necessary for Undertaker, don't get me wrong, but I dunno...maybe they could've married 'Taker to someone else for that feud. I know Kane was his brother and it made sense on that end, but after 'Taker made his big return entrance, we got a fairly short match and Kane was pinned clean. Then he was put in a World Title feud with Benoit in June that ended pretty much the same way. I don't think maskless monster Kane really became a vicious World Champ until 2010, after he had switched from heel to face to heel a few more times. He won the ECW Title as a babyface in 2008 but that didn't mean all that much. I think it would've been nice to see the unmasked monster Big Red Machine booked to win a world championship in 2003 or 2004; instead, we had to wait over seven years after the face covering was removed to see him with one of the two most important belts in the company.

The face run with the new mask was awesome and easily my favorite version of Kane. The maskless run was cool at first, but ultimately Triple H feud killed my interest in him.

That HHH feud hasn't aged well either. It was bad enough at the time, but yeesh. The only good thing was that their match at No Mercy 2002 was pretty damn solid.

He should have won the World Title He won it. I meant in 2003 he should have won it when he unmasked.

97-2003 was my favorite time frame. I understand why they unmasked him and I feel like his character probably needed that but I have never been much of a fan of unmasked Kane.
Kane is my #3 all time favorite but if not for the mask then he probably would’ve lasted about as long as any of his other gimmicks.
I’m a mask man.

Is pretty funny to see people say him unmasking made them stop taking him seriously. It helped make him a monster again after stuff like teaming with Hurricane, Katie Vick, teaming with RVD, his time with the Corporation where Rock always called him the r word, and X-Pac telling everyone he had burnt junk.
Kane really had some of the most inconsistent booking ever.

Kane really had some of the most inconsistent booking ever. if anything, that shows how important the mask was perceptively by helping him overcome those booking hindrances. i think it's bizarre that people enjoyed his unmasked work in comparison to 97-2002, but hey, there's people that are into everything.
