A mini-conversation in the post about LOD got me thinking
Are there figures where it’s a case of “one and done” I.e. the figure can’t really be bettered and then others where you just want more and more.
Example:
For me the elite series 30 LOD are perfect. Not sure what else could be done with them bar tweaking articulation? Yeah there’s the blue basics which are nice as a more cost effective option. It could also be argued for NWA / Crocket era road warriors but for me and I think most people this is THE ICONIC hawk and animal. Red pads, the classic facepaint - beautiful figures
The Fashion police elite 61 breeze and fandango. Obviously they’ve been released but even if they were still on the roster I think these are two of the most underrated figures ever. Great face scans, the soft goods shirts are great. Brilliant accessories. Really good deco and well done, again there’s a battle pack basic in white which is nice as a budget option but even if they stayed those figures imo could of be bettered.
Austin defining moments - a soft goods shirt may have been nice, but for a ring ready austin you have 3 belts, classic vest, he didn’t change up his gear too much (his heel run with the coloured braces was short and not classic era austin imo). Bar a shift good short which he didn’t wear for matches anyway for me this figure still stands up and I don’t think once since has come close as a nice package, the 3 belts really set it off. I think this might be the one most people disagree with? As a huge merch seller and one of the biggest superstars of all time he will always have figures come out and they will always sell but for me this is such a class figure.
Charlotte ultimate - great deco, arguably the best robe, brilliant scans and we’ve had a lot of Charlottes and I used to think the Blue robe was great but this ultimate is a fantastic figure.
For the more the merrier:
Savage - so many iconic attires which have yet to be done or could be redone with modern methods and improved upon. The mania 8 attire could be done better I think. The defining moments mania 7 was brilliant but savage had so many more iconic attires
Warrior - same as savage, some have been fine but could be improved upon, others still yet to be done. Again so many iconic looks you could do 20 warriors snd people would still say they would like to see a different one yet to be released.
Shawn - now the HBK exclusive I think is pure perfection and for me this is all he needed because this is the era of Shawn I love. You have the high flying, the bumping etc but you also have the cheap heat / heel stuff and he wasn’t annoying. However I appreciate others love all eras of Shawn snd there is so much you can do with him across so many eras so while they might not be instant purchases for me he has a lot of iconic looks from iconic matches

The Superstar Billy Graham figure. Great execution on the old school style and the 80s era. Basically everything I wanted in one figure.
The Four Horsemen box set Tully and Arn with the red and white color scheme was more exciting than the black tights/Brainbusters in the Legends line.
Akeem. Terrific figure and no need to enhance/improve that one.
Those are the first that come to mind.

TNF Macho Man Randy Savage from 1999. Perfect figure. That is the closest thing you are going to get to a Be a Man album era Macho Man.
Elite 47.5 Goldust. Great figure that nailed his Debut look. Probably aren't going to be seeing Goldust figures in the near future.
Elite 68 Pat Patterson. This is probably going to be his only figure he'll ever get.
Elite 70 Gerald Brisco, the same reason as Pat Patterson.
Legends 7 Ultimate Warrior. Great headscan. A truly defining moment for a figure.
Flashback Series 1 Mean Gene Okerlund. Great figure, aside from the half cancelled BAF one.

Here's my policy:
If a wrestler has one iconic look, I just get the one I feel is most definitive. For instance, LOD in red would be the most definitive for some, NWA Legends for others. Bad example as I love both, but for me someone like Iron Sheik only needs one look
But if there's others who have several iconic attires, I'll get the ones that work best for each era. Take for example Undertaker or HBK, both have tons of looks over the years, some even before their breakout periods (Mean Mark Callous, Midnight Rockers Michaels)

Even though there are no other options, its literally a perfect wrestling figure.
Kushida.
Flawlessly executed elite. Again, he's not with the company so being his one-and-done elite, its excellent
Berzerker.
The only difference would be a brown top instead of blue, and while I remember him in brown more, the figure itself is perfect.
Harlem Heat.
Great scans, great accessories. Perfectly done figures.
Boogeyman.
Yes they could do other facepaint schemes, and I'd want them, but his figure as done is flawless.
As for who I always want more?
HBK, Bret, Austin, Macho, Warrior, Hogan....I mean, its kind of obvious. The biggest talents always should have the most figures and there are SO many amazing looks we can get with all those guys.
Lastly, to your point about LOD. Yes the red & black ones are amazing, but with the advancement of Mattel as a whole I feel like they could make better shoulder pads, better heads, a more accurate body for Animal, etc. Plus I want them in the Ultimate treatement.
They also had 3 or 4 other REALLY cool looks that would make for incredible figures. It bums me out they don't have the rights to make those guys anymore.

The face scans, particular the older Graham, are both outstanding. They really raised the bar for face scans. Makes it all the more baffling how they captured Graham '88 so perfectly, but continue to repeatedly fumble with Bret. |

Ideally, I want figures for every era of a superstar's career...So LOD (for example), I'd need Road Warriors, early-90s WWF, 1996 WCW (blue), 1997 WWF, and LOD 2000. I'd also buy earlier Road Warriors and their 2003 return attires, as well Hawk from 1993 WCW/NJPW and Animal from 2000 or 2005/6.

Kamala is the perfect figure. On top of that I do have quite a few guys I’d never need another of, Goon for example.
Some guys that have really great figures but I’d take one more are
Bruno - announcer
Backlund - crazy suit and bow tie
Lod - have both sets of elites but I’d also take summerslam 92 and lod 2000
Regal - commissioner
Earthquake I’m good on but would take a Golga
There are loads more I’m sure.

For the most part..one and done.
I have two collections though and my moc collection I just want the most iconic look. The loose collection I’ll get another attire but once I have one of a character then I don’t buy more.
My exception is macho man where I’ll need every elite/ultimate as long as he’s not in a USA attire.
Surfer sting would have been another exception but oh well Mattel..thanks anyways
